Bicaz and Lacul Izvorul Muntelui
Accommodation in Bicaz
Water landscape
Lacul Izvorul Muntelui is the largest artificial reservoir on Romania’s inland rivers. It was created on the Bistrița River between 1950 and 1960. The Bicaz Dam was built between 1950 and 1960. It is 435 m long and 127 m high. The lake and dam are therefore part of a landscape in which water and architectural history are directly connected. The dates show that both elements date back to the same period of development.
At Lacul Izvorul Muntelui near Bicaz, you can fish for species including perch, pike-perch, trout, bream, rudd and crucian carp. The Kayac Fest Bicaz was held annually at Lacul Izvorul Muntelui near Bicaz, usually around mid-June. Near the Bicaz Dam, the Port Bicaz harbour is located on the shore of Lacul Izvorul Muntelui, under the name Complexul Turistic Naval Port Bicaz. It was a starting point for recreational boat trips on the lake. The fish species mentioned demonstrate the diversity of the fishing waters, while the festival and harbour represent further connections with the use of the lake.
Culture and history
Casa Regală was intended as a holiday residence for the royal family. In Bicaz, Casa Regală is a historic monument at 4 Strada Barajului; it was built in 1912. The former Teatrul Sătesc “Ion Kalinderu” in Bicaz was built on the orders of King Carol I according to plans by the architect Carol Zane. Both buildings connect specific places and names with the history of Bicaz, although the theatre remains historically classified as the former Teatrul Sătesc.
The permanent exhibition of the Bicaz Museum of History and Ethnography is divided into three sections. It covers the history of the Bistrița Valley and includes 102 paintings donated by the painter Iulia Hălăucescu. The ethnographic section of the Bicaz Museum of History and Ethnography displays woven textiles, parts of traditional clothing and peasant furniture. The museum thus brings together regional history, painting and everyday culture without reducing the three exhibition sections to a single theme.
Neamț County is carrying out an investment project for the preservation, protection and promotion of the Bicaz Museum of History. This measure concerns the preservation and promotion of the museum and complements the historical and ethnographic content with an institutional perspective.
