Landscape and Archaeological Traces

Ungheni is located in the centre of the Transylvanian Plateau. Ungheni lies on the Mureș floodplain, at the mouth of the Niraj. The Ungheni–Rotunda archaeological site is located northeast of Ungheni on an extensive upland beyond the former Târgu Mureş–Sovata narrow-gauge railway.

Culture and Architecture

The Mănăstirea Recea monastery was founded in 1992. It is dedicated to the patron saints “Sfinţii Ierarhi Martiri Ilie Iorest şi Sava”. The Recea monastery complex features rustic Romanian architecture. Byzantine influences are incorporated into its design. Brâncovenesc influences also shape its architectural appearance. The complex draws on the architectural principles of the monasteries in the foothills of the Muntenian Carpathians. It also incorporates the principles of the monasteries in central and northern Moldavia.

The Recea complex thus combines its foundation in 1992 with a dedication, a rustic Romanian architectural style and several named architectural traditions. The influences from Byzantium, Brâncovenesc architecture and the monastic landscapes of the Muntenian Carpathians and Moldavia are each part of its architectural appearance.

Churches in the Urban Area

The Sfânta Treime Church in Ungheni is 25 metres long. It is 8 metres wide. It reaches a height of 20 metres to the top of the cross. The present church building was erected in 1858. In the urban area of Ungheni, the wooden “Sf. Arhanghel” Church stands in Cerghizel. It dates from 1726. The church in Cerghid is first documented in 1733. A new church was built in Morești in 1883. Its structure has a brick foundation and a tiled roof.

Traditions and Cultural Life

The “Mlădiţele” county festival is held every year in May. It is organised by the Mureș County Centre for the Preservation and Promotion of Traditional Culture in cooperation with the Ungheni Local Council. The “Hora” folklore ensemble is based at the Ungheni Cultural Centre. There is also a children’s group there.

The cultural life therefore includes both the county festival held annually in May and the activities offered by the Cultural Centre. At the festival, the Mureș County Centre for the Preservation and Promotion of Traditional Culture and the Ungheni Local Council work together; the Cultural Centre is home to the “Hora” ensemble and a children’s group.

The Mânăstirea Cipăieni monastery is located in the wider regional area around Ungheni. The Fosta Sinagoga synagogue is also located there. The Biserica Grebenişu de Câmpie church is likewise situated in this wider regional area. The Biserica Ortodoxă Găneşti Orthodox church is also located in the wider regional area around Ungheni.
