Church and History

The Unitarian Church of Sânvăsii is a valuable historic monument with Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements. Fragmentarily preserved Late Gothic wall paintings depicting biblical figures can be seen in the apse and on the inside of the triumphal arch. Radiocarbon dating places the construction of the first church in the first third of the 13th century. Archaeological excavations in Sânvăsii uncovered the foundations of a three-aisled basilica in 2009.

The church and its surroundings thus preserve different historical traces side by side: the surviving wall paintings date from the Late Gothic period, while the dating places the origins of the first church building considerably earlier. The Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements also make the building legible as a structure that developed over time. The uncovered foundations of the three-aisled basilica complement the visible church interior with an archaeological find from the village itself.

Village History and Craftsmanship

The museum of the former village school was established near the 800-year-old church. It preserves classrooms with furniture and teaching materials from about 40 years ago. Numerous traditional farmsteads and houses from the 19th century have been preserved in Sânvăsii. A traditional weaving workshop has 13 looms and adds a craft that remains visible on site to the historical impressions.

The museum preserves not only the name of the former village school but also its specific furnishings: furniture and teaching materials give the classrooms their historical context. Together with the farmsteads and houses from the 19th century, they create a picture of various areas of village life. The weaving workshop adds a handcrafted accent. The traditional weaving workshop has 13 looms.

Visit

Admission to the Unitarian Church of Sânvăsii is free. A visit is possible by prior telephone appointment. A telephone appointment is also recommended for a visit to the traditional weaving workshop.

For both locations, telephone contact is therefore part of the practical visiting arrangements, while admission to the Unitarian Church is free. The regulations apply to two different features of the village: the historic monument with its wall paintings and the weaving workshop with its 13 looms.
