Nature and protected areas

The administrative area of the municipality contains the natural monument Izvorul și stâncăriile de la Câmana, which was designated a protected area of national interest in 2000. The area covers 25 hectares and features karst formations. It is also located on the border with Caraș-Severin County and near Domogled–Valea Cernei National Park.

The Platoul Mehedinți protected area extends across the administrative territory of Podeni. The municipality of Podeni includes part of Domogled–Valea Cernei National Park. It also includes part of the Platoul Mehedinți Geopark.

Karst and cave

A particularly specific landscape feature is Peștera Gramei cave. It is located in the municipality of Podeni on the right slope of the Topolnița Valley, in Dealul Croavelor, at an elevation of 445 metres. Its fossil and subfossil passages have a combined total length of 390 metres.

The cave is relatively easy to traverse for the most part, but it also contains difficult sections. Protective equipment and lighting are required to visit it.

Hiking around Podeni

Several trails connect Podeni with the surrounding landscapes. The “Băile Herculane – Cheile Feregari–La Șipot–Podeni” trail is 4 kilometres long, takes 5 hours, is marked with a red dot and has a low level of difficulty. Another hike leads to the natural monument Izvorul și stâncăriile de la Câmana in the territory of the municipality of Podeni. It takes approximately 8 hours and is around 12 kilometres long.

The “Podeni – Creasta Munților Mehedinți – La Ciucioare” trail leads from Podeni over the ridge of the Mehedinți Mountains to the La Ciucioare spring. On the “Băile Herculane – Crucea Albă–Izvorul Jelărău–Culmea Munților Mehedinți” trail, the route continues for approximately 1 kilometre along a path to Podeni after reaching Izvorul Jelărău.

The “Băile Herculane–Uzina Electrică–Cheile Șaua Padina–La Marginea” route also provides a connection to Podeni: From La Marginea, you can continue to Podeni along the road branching off from the ridge trail.

For hiking trails, the distance and stated duration help with scheduling; markings and difficulty level are other common criteria when choosing a route. Current trail conditions and transport schedules should be checked before setting out, especially when a route connects several starting points or destinations.
