Culture
The Roman remains range from the structure itself and the excavation site to the museum’s collections. The Roman amphitheatre of Drobeta is the fourth facility of its kind discovered to date in the territory of the former Roman province. In Dacia, the Roman baths of Drobeta rank second in terms of size and complexity. Together with the model of Trajan’s Bridge and the archaeological finds, they provide a concrete picture of Roman architecture, military history, and everyday life.
History
The Roman fort of Drobeta was built between the two Dacian Wars, in 103–105 AD, to protect an area of strategic importance to the Roman Empire. A later historical era is represented by the medieval Fortress of Severin. It was the political and administrative centre of the Banat of Severin. Its exhibitions include weapons, armour, and torture instruments, as well as collections of costumes and musical instruments. The various exhibition areas combine military, political, and cultural aspects of the fortress’s history.
The Palace of Culture of Turnu Severin is also part of the area’s historical heritage. Historically, it brought together a library, a museum, a conference amphitheatre, a cinema, a beer hall, a casino, and a theatre. Fetislam Castle is also located in the vicinity of Drobeta-Turnu Severin. Before travelling, current dates and opening hours should be checked for events and museum visits.
