In the municipality of Certeju de Sus, the 200-year-old custom “Ridicatul Steagului” takes place on the second day of Easter. During this event, several young people beat the Toaca and make improvised carbide-filled pipes boom throughout the village.
Vărmaga was first mentioned in documents in 1492. Its ruins still remain on the mountain ridge where the Biserica Trăsnită once stood. The present-day Roman Catholic church in Săcărâmb was built in 1777.

Vărmaga lies in the Metaliferi Mountains, at the foot of the Auriferi Mountains, in a depression below Vârful Gurguiota, and stretches along a watercourse for more than 7 kilometres.
The Măgurile Săcărâmbului nature reserve, located in the territory of the village of Săcărâmb in the municipality of Certeju de Sus, covers 13 hectares and consists mostly of pure beech forests with trees aged between 70 and 90 years. The forest edge of the Măgurile Săcărâmbului nature reserve is home to a species-rich butterfly fauna.
Tăul Făerag is considered the oldest reservoir in Hunedoara County and reaches a depth of up to 8.7 metres.
