Comuna Malu Mare is located in the Jiu Valley at the contact zone between the Getic Piedmont and the Romanian Plain. To the northwest, it borders the Bălăciței unit, and to the northeast, the Oltețului unit. In the area of Malu Mare, the butterfly Lycaena dispar, the large copper, has been recorded in the Natura 2000 site Coridorul Jiului. Riparian habitats here are part of the protected Natura 2000 site ROSCI0045 Coridorul Jiului. The tourism strategy of Dolj County lists Malu Mare as a commune with natural and anthropogenic tourism resources.

Geographical setting
National road DN55 crosses Malu Mare and connects the commune with other places in the region. Malu Mare CFR railway station is located on the Bucharest–Craiova–Timișoara railway line.
The Dealul Robăneşti hill is located in the vicinity of Comuna Malu Mare. In the wider regional surroundings of Comuna Malu Mare are the Dealul Gârnicioara and Dealul Popânzăleşti hills, as well as Măgura Ţepeluş hill.
Nature
The Preajba - Făcăi lake complex is a protected area north of Preajba, in the immediate vicinity of national road DN55. In the area of the Preajba - Făcăi lake complex, species including great egrets, white storks, little egrets, coots, pochards, greylag geese and Savi's warblers can be observed.
Preajba-Făcăi is listed in Malu Mare as a 19-hectare fishing lake. The Preajba-Făcăi fishery facility began operating on July 1, 1966.
Culture and history
Today's Han Preajba is the former Conacul Iancu Jianu. The former Conacul Iancu Jianu, today's Han Preajba, was built in the 18th century and was one of the most important recreational destinations in the surrounding area for many years.
Malu Mare was first documented in 1494. The pottery found at “La jumătăți” is attributed to the Basarabi culture. A settlement dating from the Hallstatt period was discovered at “La jumătăți,” on the left terrace of the Jiu, 250 meters west of the town hall. The “La jumătăți” archaeological site on the Jiu terrace is being eroded in the south by the waters of the Jiu.
The Biserica “Sf. Ștefan – Sf. Gheorghe” is located in Preajba in the commune of Malu Mare. Descriptions and repair cost estimates from 1925 and 1945 are associated with the church.
