The school museum at Şcoala Generală nr. 1 Moreni displays more than 3,000 exhibits across approximately 200 m², including ethnographic objects, examples of folk art, records and documents relating to the history of oil, old books, and paintings of considerable historical significance. The collection therefore includes both evidence of everyday life and regional culture, as well as materials documenting Moreni’s development through the oil industry.

Culture and history

The Biserica „Schimbarea la faţă“ in Moreni was built in 1868. The Biserica „Adormirea Maicii Domnului“ – „Sf. Dimitrie“ din Stavropoleos was built between 1891 and 1895. Both churches are among the city’s listed historic religious buildings and represent different construction periods within its local history.

In 1913, with 981,953 tonnes of crude oil, Moreni recorded Romania’s highest oil production. This peak lasted until the country entered the First World War and marks an important phase in the history of local industry.

In 1926, the company „Astra Română“ commissioned a Bayer degasolination plant in Moreni-Cricov. Its capacity was 13 tonnes of gasoline per day. The plant was considered the largest in Europe.

On 28 May 1929, an oil fire broke out at well 160 „Româno-Americană“ in Moreni. The fire lasted almost three years. It is considered the largest fire recorded during drilling operations at a well in Europe. The date, the named well and the long duration make this event a precisely defined episode in the history of oil.

River and peaks

The Cricovul Dulce River crosses the centre of Moreni over a length of 7.2 km. Piscuri is a peak in the vicinity of Moreni. The river and the peak represent two different geographical reference points: a course through the town and an elevation in the nearby area.
