Nature and Water

The Natura 2000 site ROSCI0197 “Plaja submersă Eforie Nord – Eforie Sud” is located in the Black Sea. It covers 141 ha. The protected area is therefore one of the prominent landscape features around Eforie Sud, without its extent continuing on land.

Lake Techirghiol lies on the edge of the Eforie spa resort. The lagoon covers 10.68 km², reaches a maximum depth of 9 m and is separated from the sea by a sandbank. As an important bird area, the lake has been designated a Ramsar site since 2006. In winter, it provides ice-free waters where the red-breasted goose can spend the night.

History and Architecture

Eforie Sud was founded in 1899, when the foundation stone was laid for Hotel Movilă. The Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist is also part of this historical development: its foundation stone was laid on 14 June 1913, and it was consecrated on 25 August 1935.

The Eforie Sud Casino was built between 1931 and 1935 as part of a series of buildings intended for summer use. At the same time, it is a representative example of maritime Art Deco architecture on the Romanian coast. The historic townscape also includes the archaeological site of Eforie Sud, which is designated a historic monument.

Two works dating from 1962 stand in the public space. The monumental artwork “Decor dobrogean” is located in Eforie Sud near Canteen No. 1. The statue “Tinerețea” was created by Oniță Iulia and installed in Eforie Sud in 1962.

Cinema and Events

Grădina Cinemascop was built in 1958. It operated continuously until the 2000s, when it was closed; it reopened in 2018. The open-air cinema Grădina de Vară Cinemascop is located in Eforie Sud and represents a distinctive cultural tradition under the open sky.

The Festivalul Pescarilor in Eforie Sud includes tasting exhibitions and cooking competitions centred on fish in the gastronomic tradition.

Spa Treatments and Special Places

Băile Reci is considered the resort’s main attraction and uses mud from Lake Techirghiol. The connection with the lake therefore extends beyond the landscape and also shapes the destination’s spa-treatment character.
