Vulcan: Fortified Church, Hiking Trail and Peaks
Accommodation in Vulcan
In Vulcan, the fortified Evangelical church preserves the triumphal arch of a Romanesque basilica from the 13th century. The complex is located in the centre of Vulcan, at Strada Principală No. 1, directly next to Vulcan Town Hall. Thus, the building, town centre and town hall are all at the same address.

Culture and History
The Gothic choir of the church was built in the 15th century. Its stone ribbed vault is supported by consoles decorated with masks. Thus, both the construction of the vault and the figurative design of the supporting elements are part of the visible features of the choir interior.
The preserved inventory includes a baptismal font dating from 1741. It bears inscriptions in Latin and German; these inscriptions are also mentioned in an 18th-century church register. The same furnishing item therefore preserves two written languages and an entry from a later historical source.
The enclosing wall dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. Its fortified entrance had a drawbridge or portcullis, as well as a machicolation opening. The entrance was therefore equipped with several defensive structural elements that formed part of the wall complex.
In 1611, the church was completely devastated by Tatars. It was restored in 1665. These two years mark the recorded destruction and the subsequent restoration of the church building.
The Evangelical cemetery lies behind the church. It contains burial chambers at the edge of the grounds, arranged beneath a shared roof. The cemetery complements the church building with its own clearly defined structural area.
Location and Access
The main entrance to the fortified Evangelical church is obscured by the town hall building. Visitors looking for the entrance on site will therefore not find it freely visible from the town hall side. The keys to the church are held by the Vulcan Evangelical Parish Office. This information is directly relevant to the access situation described above.
