In the northeast of Bistrița-Năsăud County, Rodna Mountains National Park extends across the municipalities of Maieru, Parva, Rebrișoara, Rodna, Romuli, Șanț and Telciu, as well as the town of Sângeorz-Băi. As part of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme, the national park is internationally designated as a biosphere reserve.

Rare tree and shrub species can be found in Arcalia Dendrological Park in the municipality of Şieu-Măgheruş.
Lacul Lala Mic is a glacial lake in the Rodna Mountains at an altitude of approximately 1,810 metres. The lake is located in a strictly protected area of Rodna Mountains National Park.
Călimani National Park is associated with distinctive rocks, minerals and geological structures, as well as rare and endemic species of mountain flora and fauna.
Dealul Budurlenilor is a hill in the wider regional surroundings of Bistriţa-Năsăud. Dealul Săsarmului is also a hill in the wider regional surroundings of Bistriţa-Năsăud.
Trails and Protected Areas
The Ținutul de Sus section of Via Transilvanica begins in Lunca Ilvei in Bistrița-Năsăud County and is 210 km long.
The Poiana cu narcise botanical reserve on Muntele Saca blooms every year in May and June with protected wild daffodils of the species Narcissus poeticus ssp. radiiflorus. The reserve can be reached via mountain trails from Șanț or Valea Blaznei.
Access to Peștera Cobășel is recommended exclusively with a specialised guide.
Culture and History
Castel Teleki Posmuș is a historic monument of national importance dating from the 18th century and built after 1746. Exhibitions are held in the castle; it was opened to the general public in September 2022.
The History and Archaeology Department of the Bistrița-Năsăud Museum Complex presents significant artefacts in six halls, illustrating the development of human communities in the Someșul Mare Basin from the beginnings of human settlement to the modern era.
The Liviu Rebreanu Memorial Museum has a permanent book exhibition featuring the complete works of Liviu Rebreanu, including numerous translations into more than twenty foreign languages.
The “Circuitul Bisericilor de lemn din Bistrița-Năsăud” is a designated route featuring wooden churches.
Winter and Mineral Springs
There are ski slopes and a chairlift facility for winter sports in Piatra Fântânele.
Sângeorz-Băi is a renowned health resort whose mineral springs are associated with therapeutic effects.
