Vințu de Jos: Churches, Fortresses and River Landscapes

The fortified evangelical church of Vințu de Jos, together with its surrounding wall, forms a historical monument ensemble and dates back to the 14th century. Its choir has four Gothic windows of particular artistic value. The church building, defensive wall and Gothic window design form a unified historical complex here.

Another historical complex is the medieval Zebernic Fortress in Valea Vințului, in the administrative area of Vințu de Jos. Its origins date back to the mid-13th century. It was protected by a surrounding wall, a moat and a defensive rampart. The ruins of the medieval Martinuzzi Castle are also located in Vințu de Jos, in Alba County. Between 1546 and 1551, it was fortified and expanded in the Renaissance style by Gheorghe Martinuzzi. Gheorghe Martinuzzi was governor of Transylvania, Bishop of Oradea and a cardinal. The medieval Roman Catholic monastery in Vințu de Jos comprises a church, a cloister and a necropolis.

The village festival “Marie, draga Marie”, held in the municipality of Vințu de Jos every year on 15 August, is part of the area’s cultural present. The “Vintana” folklore ensemble comprises three generations of Călușeri dancers. For a visit to the church, monastery or fortress complex, current opening hours can be checked before departure. The ROSPA0139 Piemontul Munților Metaliferi-Vințu protected area comprises eight similarly sized sub-areas covering a total of 8,369 hectares. These sub-areas provide habitat and feeding grounds for 43 bird species. The Mureșul Mijlociu–Cugir Natura 2000 site covers 356.6 hectares and includes areas of the municipalities of Blandiana, Șibot, Săliștea and Vințu de Jos in Alba County.

The Mureșul Mijlociu–Cugir Natura 2000 site lies in the continental ecoregion and protects gallery forests of willows and white poplars, which are characteristic of the Mureș floodplains. It is also home to beavers, otters and eight fish species protected at European level.
