Discover Răchita: Archaeology and Mountain Landscape

Răchita combines a clear connection to the landscape with several layers of prehistoric and more recent cultural history. At the centre is the Răchita - Viile de Jos archaeological site. It lies on the left bank of the Valea Răchitei stream, on the sunny southern slope of Vârful Zăpozii. The stream bank and slope are therefore an immediate part of the character of this archaeological site. Valea Răchitei and Vârful Zăpozii are the two fixed landscape references of the site. At the same location, tangible landscape features meet traces of earlier settlement. In Răchita, the archaeological site and the rural landscape setting are thus linked to the same place. The chronological span in Răchita extends from the Neolithic settlement through the final phase of the Coţofeni culture to the tradition of funerary posts around the middle of the 20th century.

Prehistoric traces in Răchita

The Neolithic settlement of Răchita - Viile de Jos belongs to the Petreşti culture. A fragmentary anthropomorphic statuette was also discovered at the archaeological site, that is, an incompletely preserved find in human form. Alongside the settlement, a single find is therefore also a focal point. For those interested in culture, the history of Răchita is thus connected with a specific artefact and not just with the name of a culture.

Another cultural reference at Vârful Zăpozii

A settlement of the Coţofeni culture from its final phase (III) has been confirmed at the archaeological settlement of Răchita at Vârful Zăpozii. In addition to the Petreşti culture, the Coţofeni culture is therefore also connected with Răchita. The Coţofeni settlement is thus located at Vârful Zăpozii, a specific landscape point in Răchita.

Funerary posts and more recent local history

The more recent history of Răchita includes the tradition, widespread around the middle of the 20th century, of funerary posts at the graves of men. The funerary posts in Răchita have a square cross-section. In chronological terms, this custom is clearly later than the Neolithic settlement and the settlement from the final phase of the Coţofeni culture. The square shape is itself a distinctive feature of the funerary posts.

Mountains and hills around Răchita

Several elevations form part of the landscape around Răchita. In the vicinity of Răchita are the mountain Dealul Pleşilor and the mountain Dealul Pleşeioara. In the wider regional vicinity of Răchita are the mountain Măgura Rodului and the hill Dealul Draşovului. In addition to the southern slope of Vârful Zăpozii, further landscape forms are therefore included in two spatially distinct areas. Dealul Draşovului is a hill, while Dealul Pleşilor, Dealul Pleşeioara and Măgura Rodului are mountains. For those interested in culture, the mountains and hill complement the archaeological references to the area with a distinct landscape focus. The connection to the landscape extends from the stream bank and slope of the archaeological site to mountains and a hill in the wider regional vicinity. The elevations broaden the landscape setting without equating the archaeological site with a single mountain or hill.
