Wine Landscape

The wine-growing landscape of Podgoria Jidvei lies between the Târnava Mică and Târnava Mare rivers. Its hills and valleys are covered with grapevines, giving the surroundings of Jidvei a distinctly recognizable wine-growing character. This wine-growing area includes 2,500 hectares of vineyards belonging to the Jidvei company. The company describes it as the largest vineyard area owned by a single proprietor in Romania and Europe. The vineyard area, the grape variety discovered here and the protected designation each link landscape, origin and wine diversity to Jidvei in a specific way.

Individual grape varieties are also closely associated with Jidvei. Fetească Regală was discovered near Jidvei at the beginning of the 20th century. The protected designation of origin “Jidvei” covers white, rosé and red wines, as well as sparkling, semi-sparkling and liqueur wines. These wines are made from grape varieties cultivated in the Alba region of central-western Romania.

History

The history of the village includes the ensemble of the Evangelical Church in Jidvei. It is listed in the Romanian Register of Historic Monuments and is dated to the period from the 15th to the 18th century. One precise architectural detail is the bell tower: the tower of Jidvei’s Evangelical Church was built in 1508 and stands ten metres north of the church building.

Another trace of the past leads to a fire-warning bell belonging to the Evangelical Church. It bears an inscription with the year 1681. The religious architectural heritage and the traditional functions of the bells are also directly linked to the history of the village.

Culture

The Ethnographic Museum of Jidvei is located at 2D Strada Unirii in Jidvei.

The “Strugurele de Aur” National Folklore Festival takes place in Jidvei every year. The festival’s name refers to the golden grape theme, while its classification as a national folklore festival describes the cultural character of the event. Thus, alongside architectural and museum history, traditional performances are also part of Jidvei’s public cultural life.

Trails and Wine

The signposted “Drumul vinului” wine route passes through Jidvei. Its name and signage identify it as a route through the wine-growing landscape; the connection between the route and wine production remains closely tied to the local vineyards and the Jidvei designation.

At the Jidvei Weinland Trails, wine tastings are offered to people over 18. The tastings are led by Jidvei sommeliers. The oenotourism experiences on offer also include a visit to Crama Jidvei. Reservations for the tastings and this visit are made after registering for one of the competitions. In this way, the Jidvei Weinland Trails combine tasting-based activities with a specific insight into the local wine industry.
