Moreira do Rei: Hiking, History and Minho Cuisine
Accommodation in Moreira do Rei
Moreira do Rei lies on the left bank of the River Vizela. The destination offers several clearly distinct attractions: circular walks, the Casa do Penedo built into the rocks, local history and Minho cuisine. The routes differ in length, course and notable landmarks; cultural experiences range from a medieval charter to the weekly mass in Marinhão.
Hiking trails with different profiles
In the União de Freguesias de Moreira do Rei e Várzea Cova, there are two circular trails with specified lengths and difficulty levels. The PR5 “Rota dos Espigueiros” is 12 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. It runs between Bastelo and Várzea Cova; along the way, you can see numerous espigueiros, traditional granaries. The PR10 “Trilho do Vento” is also a moderately difficult circular trail, but covers 14 kilometres. It starts and ends at the substation of the Terras Altas de Fafe wind farm.
This makes it possible to compare the two routes by distance: the PR10 is two kilometres longer than the PR5, and both are designated as moderately difficult circular trails. The espigueiros are a specifically mentioned feature of the PR5 route, while the substation is the stated starting and finishing point for the PR10. You can choose based on route length and the theme that interests you most while hiking.
The PR6 “Levadas de Pardelhas” passes through Moreira do Rei and Várzea Cova and follows the Ribeira de Moreira. Its course connects the two named places with a specifically identified watercourse. This offers another hiking option alongside the two circular trails with stated distances.
Casa do Penedo: a home among the rocks
Casa do Penedo is located in the Serras de Fafe, in the União de Freguesias de Várzea Cova e Moreira do Rei. The house was built between four large rocks, which form part of its structure. Here, the rock formations are not just a backdrop but are integrated into the building. A guided tour includes the exterior and interior of the house. Casa do Penedo also offers a mountain experience, with a pool built on the rocks and views of the Fafe mountains.
The only access to Casa do Penedo is via the rally track on the Fafe–Lameirinha section. Take this access into account when planning and check it before your visit.
History and local experiences
Around 1180, D. Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, granted a charter to the Couto de Moraria. This gives the place a tangible historical connection dating back to the time of Portugal’s first king. The chapel in the Marinhão neighbourhood also has a history: it was built by a wealthy family. A weekly mass is currently held there on Fridays.
Restaurants in Moreira do Rei serve traditional Minho cuisine prepared with local produce. If you want to include regional food in your holiday plans, you’ll find a direct connection here to the culinary traditions of Minho. Moreira do Rei is also home to the Zona de Recreio e Lazer Marinhão.
A picnic area is located in an impressive oak grove. It has several tables and benches, grills, a public water tank with fresh water, and a stage. With its seating, barbecue facilities and stage, the site offers something beyond hiking and sightseeing.
