Fafe: Culture, Nature and Hiking Trails

Fafe combines landscape experiences, historic sites and a distinctive regional culture. Between the reservoir of Barragem da Queimadela, rural paths and museums with unusual themes, you can enjoy your days in many different ways. Water, Trails and Panoramic Views

Albufeira da Queimadela is an 11-hectare reservoir fed by water from the Vizela River. The PR4 Trilho Verde da Marginal trail circles the reservoir and passes through forests, woodland and rural paths alongside the clear water. There are also short hiking trails at Barragem da Queimadela, and canoeing is possible there as well. This makes it possible to combine a day by the water with a manageable hike or an active excursion.

For longer tours, the 50-kilometre Grande Rota do Património e do Ambiente das Terras Altas de Fafe is available as a circular hiking route. The municipality also has more than ten signposted short hiking trails. Within the Município de Fafe, the Ecopista de Guimarães runs mainly through rural landscapes. If you prefer travelling by bicycle, you can complete the 30-kilometre Percurso Ciclável Eco Sport independently or with a guide. Museums and History in Fafe

Fafe also offers notable cultural attractions. Teatro Cinema de Fafe was built in 1923 and is considered an important cultural and architectural landmark of the city. At the Museu do Rali, you can see 25 rally cars, as well as a permanent exhibition and changing or travelling exhibitions, including presentations on “Fafe e o Rali de Portugal”.

The Museu das Migrações e das Comunidades focuses on the material and symbolic expressions of migration, particularly the return of Portuguese emigrants. The Museu da Imprensa preserves machinery and equipment from the former Fafe newspapers “O Desforço”, founded in 1892, and “Almanaque Ilustrado de Fafe”, founded in 1909. A printing press from 1885 is also highlighted there. At the Santa Rita Hydroelectric Museum, you can learn more about a regional electricity museum that is considered the first of its kind in Portugal.

Among the historic highlights is the Igreja Românica de Arões, the only national monument in the Município de Fafe. Its side portal bears an inscription commemorating the consecration of the church on 22 March 1237. Castro de Santo Ovídio was classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público in 1980 and is located about one kilometre from Fafe city centre. Estação Memória is housed in a converted warehouse at the former Fafe railway station; the Guimarães–Fafe railway section was closed in 1986.

Views, Traditions and Regional Cuisine

From Miradouro de São Salvador, the panoramic view extends across the entire Município de Fafe and towards Monte de Santa Catarina, also known as Penha, in Guimarães, and Monte de Santa Quitéria in Felgueiras. Miradouro de São Salvador has a landscaped leisure park with tables, barbecue areas and a bar with an outdoor terrace. In Freitas, Miradouro de Santa Marinha is located on Monte de Santa Marinha and is also known as Baloiço 440 “O Amor Que Nos Une”. The grounds, surrounded by vegetation near a chapel dedicated to Santa Marinha, include a picnic area.

The local character also includes Jogo do Pau, which is still practised in the Município de Fafe as a sport and, above all, as a tradition of historical reenactment, as well as traditional crafts. At the Museu da Palha, you can weave a traditional Trança de Repique in the “Entrança tu” area. The city’s cuisine is shaped by Vitela assada à moda de Fafe, a speciality that has been typical since at least the 19th century. Restaurants in Fafe serve the wood-oven-roasted meat with potatoes and regional Vinho Verde.
