Prudnik at the Foot of the Opawskie Mountains

Prudnik lies at the foot of the Opawskie Mountains, a small range in the Eastern Sudetes, and right on the border with the Czech Republic. The municipality is part of the Opawskie Mountains Landscape Park and its buffer zone. For a trip that combines the town’s history with excursions into the countryside, the area offers a range of options: a signposted route through Prudnik, cycling routes of various lengths and marked trails within the municipality.
The Town of Prudnik and Its History
The Prudnicki Szlak Miejski (Prudnik Urban Trail) runs for 4.5 kilometres through the town’s most notable sights. Its route is marked with blue-and-red squares, the town’s colours. Visitors interested in the town’s heritage can also include the Muzeum Ziemi Prudnickiej – Arsenał in Prudnik in their plans. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:00 and on the second Saturday of the month from 10:00 to 16:00.
Another historical stop is the Sanktuarium św. Józefa, where Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński was interned in 1954 and 1955. The Woka Tower, by contrast, remains closed indefinitely until the necessary structural repairs are completed. This difference is useful when choosing sights to visit: opening hours are provided for the museum, while the tower is currently closed.
Countryside and Marked Trails
The landscape features the mountain massifs of Góra Parkowa, Długota and Kobylica, as well as Biskupia Kopa, which also forms a striking backdrop to Prudnik. Kobylica is 392 metres high. Above a pond in a former quarry stands a three-metre-high granite obelisk honouring the Romantic poet Joseph von Eichendorff. The Prudnik–Jindrichov cycling route also offers natural points of interest, including ancient oaks designated as natural monuments.
The municipality has a 35-kilometre network of multifunctional tourist trails, with signposted routes and numerous rest areas featuring tourist maps. For a horseback excursion, a specially marked 11-kilometre riding trail, marked in yellow, runs between Moszczanka and the Sanktuarium św. Józefa. These two offerings differ in form and can be included as separate focuses in your trip planning.
Cycling Between the Town and the Border
The “Wokół Lasu Prudnickiego – Pętla I” cycling route is 20 kilometres long. It runs from Prudnik via Łąka Prudnicka, Moszczanka, Wieszczyna and Dębowiec, then back to Prudnik. “Pętla II” also starts in Prudnik and is shorter, at 13.5 kilometres; its route passes the Sanktuarium św. Józefa, Rozdroże pod Trzebiną and Dębowiec before returning to town. Both routes are circuits, but differ in length and the places along the way.
For a cross-border cycling trip, the 10-kilometre Prudnik–Jindrichov route is another option: 7 kilometres lie within the municipality of Prudnik, after which the route passes through Dębowiec and crosses the Polish-Czech border to Jindrichov. It is marked in blue and green. The 15-kilometre Prudnik–Moszna cycle path begins at the Stanisław Szozda roundabout in Prudnik. The M. Orłowicz Trail, in turn, is considered the main trail of the Opawskie Mountains and the Polish Sudetes, and begins at Prudnik railway station.
