Gothic architecture and city history

The Town Hall is a special starting point for discovering Namysłów’s secular Gothic architecture. It is one of the few buildings of this kind to have been fully preserved. The Town Hall tower also plays an audible role in city life: the Namysłów Hejnał sounds from there every day at 12:00. It was composed by Eugeniusz Odoj, who was born in Namysłów. The surviving fortifications add to the picture of the city’s history. Around 80 percent has been preserved—an approximate figure describing the extent of the structures that remain. At the Wjazdowa Brama Miejska, also known as Brama Krakowska, there is a viewpoint open to visitors, with views across Namysłów. Visits are listed as available by prior telephone appointment, Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00 and Saturday from 9:00 to 13:00.

The Gothic castle is also part of the city’s history. Construction of the present-day buildings began around 1360 on the orders of Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg. The castle is currently closed to visitors, so it can be considered a historic landmark rather than an accessible visitor attraction.

Discover exhibitions and crafts

Izba Regionalna is dedicated to the history of the region. This is presented in its six exhibition halls, and various temporary exhibitions are also held. It offers insight into regional history and a reason to take the current exhibition schedule into account when planning your day.

At Muzeum Techniki Młynarskiej, original tools of the miller’s trade are the focus of the economic section. This complements the regional history perspective with specific tools and the technology of milling. Visits are available by prior telephone appointment, Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00 and Saturday from 9:00 to 13:00. Island Park and waterbirds

Centralny Park na Wyspie lies just behind the northern walls of the Old Town and covers two of the three islands in the Widawa. The third island in the park is a protected refuge for waterbirds. You can watch the birds from a viewing tower on the neighbouring island. The park therefore offers two distinct perspectives: its unusual setting on the river islands and the chance to observe waterbirds from the viewing tower. If you like to include nature-watching in your holiday, you will find a different focus here from the buildings and exhibitions.
