Discover architectural history and churches

The town hall in Głubczyce tells a story of alteration and reconstruction: in 1570, it was built on the site of a 14th-century merchant’s house, using parts of the earlier building. The town hall was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt between 2006 and 2008. These different dates relate to distinct stages in its history—from the medieval predecessor building, through its construction, to its reconstruction.

The parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary also offers several points of interest for visitors interested in culture. It dates from the second half of the 13th century and has an organ built in 1907, with more than 60 stops, from the Gebrüder Rieger workshop. Those interested in sacred architecture and historic instruments will find two distinct features in this one building.

The Franciscan church and monastery complex in Głubczyce was built between 1753 and 1770 to a design by Jan Innocenty Töpper of Prudnik. The complex includes a Baroque church and a distinctive four-wing monastery arranged around a quadrangle with an inner courtyard. Unlike the 13th-century parish church, this complex represents a much later phase of construction. Other historic sites in the municipality include the Church of St John the Baptist in Chomiąża, dating from 1575, and the Church of the Holy Trinity in Opawica, built between 1701 and 1706 and listed as a Class “O” monument.

Places with a history of their own

In Grobniki, the castle dates from the 16th century and the St Barbara’s Chapel from 1701; the castle was remodelled in the 19th century. Beside the chapel is a spring well which, according to local tradition, was believed to have miraculous powers from the 17th century onwards. Until the end of the Second World War, the well was one of Silesia’s larger pilgrimage sites. This history may also interest travellers exploring the area’s religious past, while distinguishing the site’s former importance from pilgrimage activity today.

Landscape, woodland and getting active

The Mokre–Lewice Protected Landscape Area covers 6,527 ha and includes part of the Opawskie Mountains. Its landscape features include gorges and the valleys of the Troja, Osobłoga and Opawica rivers. Rare and protected plants grow there, and it also provides refuges for protected animals. A nature-focused stay is therefore quite different from exploring the municipality’s architectural history.

The Głubczyce Forest is described as important for tourism and recreation and as having considerable biotherapeutic value. A three-row linden avenue, designated a natural monument, connects the municipal forest with Głubczyce. You can include this connection in your holiday plans as a distinct way to experience the landscape. When choosing a holiday apartment, consider whether you would prefer to focus on the forest and nature or on historic buildings.

If you are interested in cycling, you can also take account of the described route of the Opavice cycling trail: from Lewice, it follows a local road and then a field track towards Zubrzyce, which is part of the Głubczyce municipality. For planning your day, the change in route type is a useful point of reference; no information about the route’s length or duration is provided.

Creative activities and travel connections

BRICK FREAK in Głubczyce offers stop-motion animation workshops and creative and educational LEGO workshops for individuals or groups. Activities include LEGO ART, LEGO BRICKHEADS and LEGO DUPLO Pociąg do programowania; LEGO bricks are also available to rent. This offers a different way to spend time in the municipality than visiting historic buildings or staying in the protected landscape area.

The municipality has road connections to the Czech Republic at Pietrowice–Krnov, Pomorzowiczki–Osoblaha, Lenarcice–Linhartovy, Chomiąża–Chomyz, Równe–Slezské Rudoltice, Rusin–Gadzowice, Ciermięcice–Krnov and Opavica–Město Albrechtice. These connections are located in different parts of the municipality. When choosing a holiday apartment, base your decision on the destinations that matter most to your trip, rather than treating every excursion as if it started from the same place.
