Złotoryja: Gold History and a Medieval Town
Accommodation in Złotoryja
Gold History and the Townscape of Złotoryja
Gold is a recurring theme in Złotoryja: you’ll encounter it in the name of the Muzeum Złota, at the Aurelia Mine and at the International Gold Panning Championships. The town also has historic buildings from different centuries. This gives you a choice of different themes when planning your trip—from the town’s history and mining to an annual competition.

The Muzeum Złota is housed in a historic building dating from the second half of the 17th century. The building is incorporated into the town’s defensive walls. The museum’s location is therefore itself part of Złotoryja’s historic fabric. If you are interested in the town’s history, it is worth looking at this connection between museum, building and fortifications; it dates from a different period than the medieval heritage of the old town.
The Aurelia Mine offers another connection to mining. It has an underground tourist route about 100 metres long. Fragments of the mine’s hoisting shaft are also located beneath Góra św. Mikołaja. The mine’s origins date back to the mid-17th century. The route and the shaft fragments thus represent different aspects of mining: an underground tourist route on the one hand, and surviving remains of the hoisting shaft on the other. The approximate length of the route gives you a clear idea of its extent without saying anything about how long a visit takes.
The town’s buildings offer their own historical themes. The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (pw. Narodzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny) dates from the 13th century. Baszta Kowalska is one of the town’s best-preserved medieval buildings. Historic townhouses stand around the Rynek in the old town, where fragments of medieval defensive walls have also survived. When choosing what to see, you can consider whether you are most interested in medieval architecture, the history of the fortifications or the more recent past of individual buildings. The buildings mentioned reflect different periods rather than just one era.
The International Gold Panning Championships are another facet of the town’s gold tradition. The competition takes place annually and has been held since 1993. It is one of the recurring events that add to Złotoryja’s gold theme. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the annual competition from the town’s permanent historic buildings and mining traces: the championships are an event, while the museum, mine and old town each have their own sites and heritage.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Złotoryja, you can start by thinking about your interests: would you like to focus on gold history and mining, or are you especially interested in the history of the churches, fortifications and old town? The competition is also part of the town’s character as an annual event.
