Culture and Landscape

ZÅ‚otoryja lies in the northern part of the Kaczawskie Foothills, while the old town is situated high above the valley of the Kaczawa River.

The origins of ZÅ‚otoryja are linked to a mining settlement that arose around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. Its inhabitants extracted gold from river deposits; in 1211, the settlement was granted town rights.

Historical sights for visitors include the market square, the 1604 Dolphin Fountain, the Neo-Renaissance town hall, historic town houses, the Mayor's House and the Blacksmith's Tower, a preserved remnant of the medieval fortifications.

A specially marked educational trail runs through the ZÅ‚otoryja Forest: the Stone Crosses Trail in Czaple (Choiniec), in the Land of Extinct Volcanoes. The trail is approximately 14 kilometres long and includes seven stone crosses.

The Aurelia Mine, a disused adit on the northwestern slope of Góra Mikołaja, is open to visitors for exploration and guided tours.
