Half-timbered houses and regional architectural history

Bogatynia grew out of the old Lusatian street village of Rychłów, which lay along the Miedzianka, a right-bank tributary of the Lusatian Neisse. The Umgebinde and log-building style, also known as Lusatian architecture, is an architectural landmark of Bogatynia. In the wider region, Lusatian half-timbered architecture in post-and-beam and log construction shapes Bogatynia and the surrounding villages; this architecture is characteristic of the 17th and 18th centuries.

One specific example stands at Aleja Żytawska 32: the Lusatian Umgebinde house there was built in the first half of the 19th century and is located in the historic centre of Bogatynia. Its construction date adds a later historical note alongside the regional architecture characteristic of the 17th and 18th centuries. Churches and history in the townscape

The churches also offer distinct historical perspectives. The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Bogatynia was built by the Cistercian Order in 1868 as a monastery church. The Church of St Peter and Paul is a Baroque church with remnants of an earlier Gothic church building. It also contains a rich collection of epitaphs from the 17th and 18th centuries. For a comparison of architectural history, the focus is thus on the former monastic function of one church and the Baroque form, traces of Gothic construction and epitaphs of the other.

Another historical layer is told by Aleja Żytawska, formerly Waryńskiego Street. It was almost completely destroyed in the 2010 flood and subsequently extensively renovated. The work included the roadway, pavements, lighting and street furniture. The history of the street therefore adds a more recent chapter of post-flood urban renewal to the older architectural styles.

The Open Day of Umgebinde Houses takes place every year on the last Sunday in May. As part of the event, a guided walk was held along the Umgebinde Houses route. A themed excursion through Bogatynia, the town of Umgebinde houses, was led by licensed Sudeten guide Aneta Strojanowska.

Cultural programme and leisure by the water

The Bogatyński Ośrodek Kultury hosts competitions, performances and concerts, as well as film screenings at the “Kadr 3D” cinema. This means that theatre, music and cinema complement the town’s architectural attractions.

Opened in 2025, the Aquatynia leisure pool offers water slides during the summer season, as well as outdoor relaxation and fun for families. The complex includes a shallow children’s pool and colourful slides, including a double slide and the “Słonik” slide. Beside the pool is a sunbathing lawn with shade sails. There is also a sandy area for recreational activities and sports with friends. The facilities range from the children’s pool and slides to open space and games in the sand.
