Burial Chapels from Different Periods
The Potulicki burial chapel was added between 1550 and 1575 by the Potulicki family as a late Renaissance burial chapel on the south side of the church’s chancel. Today, it is dedicated to Saint Stanislaus. Its dimensions are specific: seven metres long and six metres wide. The almost equal sides are easy to compare; the length exceeds the width by exactly one metre. This connects the historical period with a tangible sense of the chapel’s proportions. The patronage and present-day dedication also represent different points of reference: the Potulicki family is associated with its construction, while Saint Stanislaus is associated with its dedication.
The Engeström burial chapel dates from a different period: it was built in the second half of the 19th century. Its eclectic altar contains sculptures from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Some of the sculptures therefore come from centuries before the chapel itself was built. “Eclectic” describes a design that incorporates elements from different styles; the term draws attention to the combination of different forms at the altar, while the date places the chapel’s construction in its historical context. This very difference in age makes the furnishings an interesting part of the chapel’s history in their own right.
Epitaphs and Family Remembrance
The Engeström Chapel also has a distinct character as a place of remembrance. It contains seven epitaph plaques honouring members of the Engeström family. One epitaph is dedicated to Lars Engeström and his wife Rozalia, née Chłapowski; it includes a bust of Lars Engeström and four cartouches commemorating their children. There is also a cartouche bearing the Engeström family coat of arms above the entrance. The plaques, bust, cartouches and coat of arms are different forms of family remembrance and give the chapel several historical points of reference. The four cartouches direct attention to the couple’s children, while the bust portrays Lars Engeström.
The Engeström burial chapel was entered in the register of monuments on 23 July 1970. A wooden cemetery bell tower is also among the monuments of Ceradz Kościelny associated with the year 1958. Together with the two burial chapels, it broadens the local cultural themes to include a wooden structure.
