Beaches and trails in the municipality

Sjøsanden is an 800-metre-long sandy beach at the entrance to Mandal, located in Furulunden. The area has an extensive network of hiking trails; public toilets are located near the beaches. Sjøsanden is used by locals and tourists not only in summer, but throughout the rest of the year as well. This means the beach can be considered more than just a destination for a summer day.

There is free parking at Sjøsanden and a promenade along the beach, making it easily accessible. If you depend on parking, check the situation before setting out. Improvements to fences and walkways along the promenade are also planned. The project is intended to protect the dunes and make the beach more accessible to everyone; check the project’s status before your visit.

Lillebanken beach has a water playground with a zip line and other play equipment. This offers a different focus from a walk through Furulunden. Both examples show different ways to spend time by the water and outdoors, without limiting a visit to the summer months.

Industrial history and culture in Lindesnes

Sjølingstad Uldvarefabrik was founded in 1894 and is now designated a national monument of Norwegian textile industry. During guided tours, visitors can see how woollen goods are still made there on the old machinery for sale. Here, history is evident not only in a building, but also in a craft that is still practised.

In Mandal, Vigeland Hus is the childhood home of the artist brothers Gustav and Emanuel Vigeland. A guided tour offers visitors a special insight into the artists’ childhood and lives; check seasonal details before planning your visit. Mjålandsstova offers a different historical perspective: this open-air museum in Øyslebø shows how people lived and made their homes in the 19th century. At the old Heddeland burial ground, the journey back in time goes further: it contains 33 burial mounds from the Early Iron Age. Paths, an information board and a rest area are part of this developed cultural heritage site.

River activities and regional routes

In Lindesnes, you can fish for salmon in the two salmon rivers Mandalselva and Audnaelva. Mandalselva has a 50-kilometre stretch of river suitable for salmon. For a different kind of activity, Adventure Norway offers rafting and Via Ferrata. The provider is located on the banks of Mandalselva in Hesså, near Bjelland.

There are also regional points of reference for finding your way on longer routes: the North Sea Cycle Route runs along the coast through the Lindesnes region. Regional cuisine and special experiences

In the wider region, Kafe Fjellhallen at Lindesnes fyr serves homemade food. In summer, the menu also includes organic bread baked in a wood-fired oven and cinnamon knots. This seasonal offering is quite different from a visit to Under: the underwater restaurant is in Båly, in Spangereid, at the far end of Lindesnes. Guests dine five metres below the surface and can observe marine life through views of the seabed.
