Accommodation in Vinje
Vinje combines literary history with distinctive building traditions: Vinjestoga preserves its original furnishings, Vinje kyrkje features a timber structure with panelled walls and a late Baroque interior, and the Vinjesenteret is dedicated to literature and journalism. If you would like to include more than cultural attractions in your trip, Vinjevatn in the surrounding area also offers an opportunity for peaceful paddling. Local culture and nearby water activities provide different focal points for planning your trip.
Building traditions in Vinje: Vinjestoga and Vinje kyrkje
Vinjestoga was built in 1824 and is located right next to the Vinjesenteret. Its original furnishings have been preserved; much of the interior dates from the time when Aasmund Olavsson Vinje and his family lived there. In this way, the history of the building is connected with the time when the poet and his family called it home. During the summer season, staff at the Vinjesenteret offer guided tours of the Stoga. Check the latest visitor information before your trip so you can include this seasonal offering in your plans.
Vinje kyrkje stands on the slope down to Vinjevatn, on the village’s old church site. The panelled, cruciform wooden church was built in 1796 by Jarand Rønjom from Åmot. Its late Baroque interior features works by Henrik Sørensen, Dagfinn Werenskiold and Finn Krafft, as well as other well-known artists from the region. While the preserved furnishings are the focus at Vinjestoga, the church brings together its architectural form and interior art. The two sites show different aspects of Vinje’s architectural and cultural history.
Literature, journalism and getting involved at the Vinjesenteret
Located in central Vinje, the Vinjesenteret is a museum of literature and journalism. Its main focus is the journalist and poet Aasmund Olavsson Vinje, as well as the poets Aslaug Vaa, Tarjei Vesaas and Halldis Moren Vesaas. Visitors can read extracts from books and journalistic texts, and view images, quotations and digital installations. Text, images and digital elements offer different ways to engage with the museum’s themes.
There is a children’s trail, and the centre also offers games about source criticism and a reading corner. Visitors to the Vinjesenteret can also take part in the embroidery project Vinjerevla. The 12.5-metre-long strip of fabric is designed around the poetry cycle Storegut by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje, written in 1866. The opportunity to participate may depend on the season. A regular event for literature enthusiasts is Litteraturdagane, the Vinjesenteret’s main festival, held every year on the last weekend in September. Check that year’s programme before your trip.
Paddling and nature in the surrounding area
Vinjevatn, in the area around the destination, is suitable for peaceful kayaking and canoeing. Conditions on the water vary with the season. Moose, beavers and stoats may be found in the area. When choosing a holiday apartment, it can help to consider how you want to prioritise your trip: the cultural attractions mentioned are in Vinje, while Vinjevatn is a paddling destination in the surrounding area. This can help you decide whether local culture or activities on the water should play a bigger part in your stay.
