Edland: Reinparken, Cross-Country Ski Trail and Storegut
Accommodation in Edland
Edland offers a range of travel experiences: Reinparken focuses on cycling and exercise, alongside cross-country skiing, swimming and the history of Storegut. Active experiences and cultural discoveries can therefore form distinct parts of your travel plans.
Reinparken: Cycling and exercise
Reinparken is a social gathering place in Edland and includes a cycling facility, a jogging and hiking trail, and a bathing area. The park’s theme is the wild reindeer. The cycling facility includes a large asphalt pump track, a jump line, a wall ride and a cycling skills course.
The bike park is suitable for all age groups and a range of skill levels; parking is available at Edland School. This broad suitability may be a helpful consideration for families with children of different ages. The facilities may be updated, so check the latest information before your visit.
Cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and swimming
A floodlit cross-country ski trail in Edland is five kilometres long and can also be used in the evening. Grooming depends on conditions and local operations; check the latest information before setting out. Haukelifjell Ski in Edland is considered a snow-reliable destination, with early snowfall and a dry, cold climate. Snow conditions vary by season. The terrain park at Haukelifjell Ski is floodlit and available for evening skiing.
At the mouth of Tveitevatnet in Edland, the water is considered very pleasant for swimming, and the Kjelaåi flows calmly there. Swimming here is a seasonal outdoor activity. Together with the bathing area in Reinparken, it offers another way to focus your stay on outdoor activities.
Bike rides of varying lengths
For a bike ride, Edland has a shorter route around the “Bygdevegen”. Alternatively, you can cycle the entire mountain crossing over Haukelifjell along the E134. The comparison is about the length of the ride, not a guaranteed travel time: road and cycling conditions vary by season. Check the latest conditions before setting off.
Storegut and Edland’s history
Storegut (1764–1791) was born at Norigard in Edland, Vinje. A sculpture of Storegut was unveiled in 2016 during Vinje’s Literature Days; the monument stands by Edland School. This connects the memory of a person born in Edland with a specific place in the village today.
To reach the Storegut monument, take the turnoff from the E134 onto the Rv 362/Storegutvegen road. This guidance is useful if you want to include the monument in your plans.
More cultural and nature experiences in the wider Vinje destination
In the wider Vinje destination, the Vinje Centre focuses on literature and journalism. The museum is dedicated to Aasmund Olavsson Vinje, Aslaug Vaa, Tarjei Vesaas and Halldis Moren Vesaas. Visitors can view exhibitions, play games about source criticism, follow a children’s trail and read in a reading corner.
Another historical highlight in the wider Vinje destination is the Forsvarsmuseet. It mainly covers the fighting in Vinjesvingen in 1940 and everyday life during the Second World War. The museum is open for guided tours during the summer season; outside the season, guided visits can be booked by appointment.
Fløtarvegen is also in the wider Vinje destination. This family-friendly hiking trail follows Hyllandsfoss and passes traces of timber rafting, old stone walls, mills and power-generation facilities. Several rest areas by the river, as well as swimming opportunities on warm days, give this trail a different focus from the museums.
Choose a holiday apartment in Edland based on the experiences you want to shape your trip: local cycling, swimming and winter sports, or cultural sites and trails in the wider Vinje area as well. This lets you take your preferred mix of daily activities into account when choosing your destination.
