Tokke: Telemark Canal, Mountain Trails and Culture

Tokke combines an impressive waterscape with trails and cultural sites. Dalen is centrally located in Tokke, at the end of Bandak and the Telemark Canal. From Skien, the Telemark Canal reaches Dalen after 105 kilometers; the route has 18 lock chambers and a height difference of 72 meters. Passenger boats operate on the canal between Skien and Dalen and between Dalen and Skien, including the M/S Henrik Ibsen and the M/S Victoria. Passenger services are seasonal; check the schedule before traveling.

Waterscapes and Mountain Trails

The western part of Bandak, where Tokkeåi flows into the lake through the Bandak Delta, is surrounded by steep mountains rising up to 1,000 meters. Water, delta and mountain slopes define this stretch. Fishing is also focused on specific waters: Tokkeåi and Bandak are home to a trout population more than 10,000 years old. Trout from Bandak can weigh over 15 kilograms. Check the applicable rules and permit requirements before fishing.

The Lårdalstigen trail follows the ridge from Dalen to Lårdal and reaches up to 800 meters above the Telemark Canal. The full route is 14 kilometers long. If you are planning a shorter distance, consider the Rui Sherpa steps in Dalen: they are one kilometer long, with 810 steps and 200 meters of elevation gain. The one-way journey takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Trail conditions can vary; check them before setting out.

Another hiking option is the Rui route to the Vest-Telemark Museum in Eidsborg. This section is five kilometers long and takes about two hours one way. It lets you combine a hike with a cultural destination. The different route lengths give you a concrete basis for dividing your days between longer trails and shorter stages.

Architecture and Art History

Dalen Hotel was built in 1894 in an exuberant romantic style. Its architecture features dragon heads, towers and spires, as well as balconies, projections and cornices. In 2000, the hotel received the Europa Nostra Silver Medal, the organization’s highest award. The award recognized the preservation of the building as a unique cultural monument.

Grimdalstunet also grounds art history in Tokke: it was Anne Grimdalen’s childhood home. A museum on the same grounds presents her life and artistic work. Høydalsmo, on the E134, is considered the gateway to Tokke. It has a network of cross-country ski trails with routes of 2.5, 3, 5 and 10 kilometers; availability is seasonal.
