On Hitra, the range of things to explore extends from coastal culture and historic sites to golf, walking trails and trips on the water. This lets you tailor your holiday to a variety of interests: spend time exploring history and exhibitions, enjoy outdoor activities, or combine the two. Specific places to visit include Hopsjø, the Kystmuseet in Fillan and the golf course near Sandstad.

Coastal culture and history

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Hopsjø was one of the largest trading posts in Trøndelag. The coastal culture offered to visitors at Hopsjøbrygga includes a general store, a whaling museum, culinary traditions and lively activity on the quayside. A cultural trail also leads from Hopsjø to Brannhaugen.

The Kystmuseet in Fillan also focuses on coastal culture. Its themes include life on the coast about 100 years ago and aquaculture. The free exhibition “Ringer i vannet” is located on the first floor of the Hitra express boat terminal. It explains the effects of Norwegian aquaculture on nature, society and administration.

For a trip on the water, Nattseilerne offers a photography and white-tailed eagle safari. The tour departs from Hopsjø Kyst- og Kultursenter and travels in a restored old wooden boat into the Frøyfjord between Hitra and Frøya. This means Hopsjø offers a choice of different activities: a cultural trail or a boat trip.

Nature and activities

Hitra offers diverse natural landscapes, as well as opportunities for hunting and fishing. Numerous roads and trails are ideal for walks. A special option for golf enthusiasts is the 9-hole golf course at Akset near Sandstad. The facility includes a driving range and a putting green, with views of Terningen Lighthouse and the Trondheimsleia.

Another guide to activities on Hitra is the Kjentmannsprøven, with a total of 45 stations: 30 on land and 15 at sea. There is also a dedicated Hitra map for hiking at a scale of 1:50,000, revised in 2015. If you plan to use the map, check that it is available locally before your trip.

At DalPro, visitors can feed a deer. The farm shop sells products made from venison and wild sheep meat, including sausages, meat patties, Fenalår, Pinnekjøtt, shank and fresh meat. When planning, you can therefore take both activities and local products into account as interests in their own right.
