Trading History and Local Cuisine

Hopsjøbrygga is an original trading centre on the coast of Trøndelag in Melandsjø. The site includes a krambod (general store), which may be the oldest surviving one in Norway. The trading centre and the shop connect the history of Hopsjø to a specific place and its former commerce.

Hitra Church and Its Architectural History

Hitra Church stands in Melandsjø. It is a natural-stone church with a square, cross-shaped floor plan and 400 seats. It was built in 1927 to plans by architect Claus Johannessen Hjelte (1884–1969). Its architectural history is also linked to Dolmøya: the church replaced the old main church there after it burned down on the night of 3 February 1920.

A royal resolution of 23 November 1923 approved the construction of the new church in Melandsjø on the condition that Hitra municipality took responsibility for maintaining the church ruins on Dolmøya. This clearly links the new building in Melandsjø with the ruins on Dolmøya. The dates mark different stages: the fire, the approval and, finally, the construction of today's church.

Two Cultural Trails, Different Views

The short hike to Hopsjøvarden starts at the car park by Hopsjøbrygga. The route first follows a marked cultural trail, then climbs to the summit viewpoint. From there, you can look out over the fjord and the historic trading area. The trail therefore connects a visit to the trading post with a bird's-eye perspective on the landscape and its history.

The cultural trail on Brannhaugen offers a different focus: a burial mound site lies at the summit. To the northwest, views extend to the mouth of Dolmsundet, the Bispøyene, and Titran and Frøya. When comparing the two trails, it comes down to the views you are looking for: Hopsjøvarden looks out over the fjord and the trading area, while Brannhaugen brings the burial mound site and other named coastal places into view. Hopsjødagene in the Annual Calendar

Hopsjødagene is a recurring festival celebrating the history of Hopsjø and coastal culture. The 37th edition took place in 2026, from 16 to 18 July.
