Fardal can be explored through several historical layers: farm history, archaeological traces and a memorial stone tell different stories. The name itself also points to a landscape that once covered a broader area than its current use might suggest.

A farm and a valley with a changing name

Fardal farm lies about 70 metres above sea level. In the past, the name Fardal covered the entire valley: from the present-day settlement by the sea, past the farm and into the valley now usually called Øvstedalen. This earlier meaning of the name helps orient visitors to a cultural landscape in which the farm and valley belong together. Fardal farm was probably established as early as the Migration Period. This cautious dating makes clear that its history reaches far back, without presenting the suspected origins as a confirmed date.

Archaeological traces and historical remembrance

The Rusti site lies on cultivated land and hilly terrain with several small, level areas. Several automatically protected cultural heritage sites have been found there: cultivation layers, postholes, cooking pits, a kiln and a well. Activities related to farm operations, as well as production and manufacturing, took place at Rusti during several phases of the Early Iron Age. The different traces give the site a broad historical dimension: they include evidence of cultivated land as well as other activities and structures.

Another focus is remembering the soldiers who took part in the war against Sweden from 1807 to 1814. The memorial stone in Fardal commemorates them. Alongside the archaeological evidence, it provides a tangible form of historical remembrance in the village. Fardal bedehus was built in 1949–1950. It lies 1.9 kilometres up the valley from Osen in Fardalen, at the junction with the road to Øyragrendi. Its location is a precise reference point in the valley.

Farmsteads and features of the cultural landscape

Uglum, a farmstead in the upper Fardal valley, is included in Sogndal municipality’s cultural heritage plan. It comprises five SEFRAK-registered buildings as well as several masonry structures, stone walls, clearance cairns and pollarded trees. This combination describes Uglum not only through its buildings, but also through the structures and agricultural features of the cultural landscape. Together with the farm history and the finds at Rusti, it presents a picture that distinguishes between different kinds of historical traces rather than reducing them to a single attraction.

More to explore in the wider Sogndal destination

In the wider Sogndal destination, ViteMeir offers a different focus: the interactive science centre is located in the heart of Kaupanger, in Sogndal municipality, and welcomes children, young people and adults. Its offerings include interactive exhibitions, experiments, activities and educational programmes. Spread across three floors, the centre explores topics including energy, the human body, mathematics, weather and space. This variety of subjects offers a contrast to Fardal’s historically shaped cultural landscape.

Boating and fjord culture are also regional themes. The Sogn Fjord Museum in Kaupanger explores their history; at the ferry quay, visitors can see boats, boatbuilding tools and a large selection of fishing equipment. At the museum, Kafé Heiberg serves freshly prepared traditional pancakes, coffee and snacks. For time outdoors, the wider Sogndal destination has the Røvhaugane recreation area beside the Narvasete residential area, with a shelter and a prepared fire pit. The Campusrunden circular walk follows the Sogndalselva through the centre of Sogndal and past the viewpoint at Fosshaugane Campus.

The Sogndal Tourist Information Centre provides information about local attractions and experiences, as well as offerings in the Sognefjord region. An interactive screen also links to accommodation, activities, restaurants, hiking opportunities and transport services in Sogndal municipality. When looking for a holiday rental, you can decide whether to focus your trip plans on Fardal’s farm history and cultural landscape or on the wider range of topics in the Sogndal destination.
