Leikanger offers a surprising variety of discoveries: the Baldersteinen stands in an area with numerous archaeological finds, rare tree species grow in Prestegards-hagen, and several public swimming spots offer different facilities. There are also guided tours about history and agriculture, as well as opportunities for sea kayaking and hiking. A striking stone and an old legend

The Baldersteinen stands on the Husabø farm, next to Leikanger’s new cemetery. It rises almost 8 metres above the ground and is also known as Fritjovsteinen. It is associated with the legend of Fritjov the Bold. Archaeologists date the stone to the period between 500 and 800. Its location in an area with numerous archaeological finds and its connection to the legend give the visit a historical and narrative dimension.

Those interested in local culture can also consider a cultural walk to Leikanger Church and Prestegards-hagen. Such walks are offered when available and by arrangement. Henjatunet focuses on something different: it offers guided tours about historical aspects of everyday life in the hamlet and about farming today. The walks pass burial mounds from the Viking Age and go through orchards. Both historical traces and agriculture are therefore at the heart of the experience.

Rare trees and orchards

Prestegards-hagen is notable for its unusually diverse vegetation, including rare tree species such as Ginkgo biloba and the giant sequoia Sequoiadendron giganteum. Peach, apricot and walnut trees also grow there. The garden thus brings together rare trees and fruit trees; it offers a distinct nature and plant discovery during your stay, alongside the area’s historical attractions.

Henjatunet also offers a way to experience local agriculture beyond its guided tours: during the season, apples, pears, plums and fruit juices are sold there. You can also press fruit yourself. Swimming spots with different facilities

Fylkesmannsstranda is the most frequently used public swimming spot in the centre of Leikanger. It has a bathing pier and a swimming platform, as well as a sandy and pebbly beach. Toilets, a fire pit, tables and benches complete the facilities. If you appreciate different places to relax during a day of swimming, you’ll find designated seating areas and a fire pit here, in addition to the beach.

Prestastrondi is near Leikanger’s secondary school. The easily accessible beach has a bathing pier, a pebbly beach and a grassy area; there is also a beach volleyball court. Nybøstrondi is another public swimming spot, with a small pebbly and sandy beach, a large shade tree and access to toilets. The swimming spots offer different options: you can choose according to what matters to you, whether that’s a grassy area, a swimming platform or a shady place.

Sea kayaking and hiking

Five sea kayaks belonging to Sogndal Turlag are available for hire at Hermansverk harbour. For a different kind of active outing, the hike to Mælen begins in Grinde, about 6 kilometres west of Hermansverk in Leikanger. This gives you the choice of an activity on the water or a hiking destination. The approximate distance refers to Grinde, west of Hermansverk; it is not the length of the hike.
