Gulatinget: History and art at Flolid

Gulatinget was one of the oldest regional assemblies of the Viking Age. From 900 to 1300, people from western Norway gathered there to discuss politics, enact laws and administer justice. The Gulatingslova is the oldest preserved collection of laws in the Nordic region. At Flolid, Gulatinget Memorial Park commemorates this history; it opened in August 2005.

Art also shapes the site: sculptor Bård Breivik created the monumental works Tingveggen, Tinghella and Eldsirkelen. If you are particularly interested in the history of the assembly, Eivindvik also has a cultural walking trail near the centre.

Trails, recreation and a sheltered bathing cove

A network of trails for walking and recreation runs throughout Gulatinget Park. The different trail destinations offer practical points of reference for planning your day: a cleared hiking trail leads to Guløytoppen, and another trail, 1 kilometre long, leads to the western cape. The park also has a sheltered bathing cove with an access road. Tusenårsparken also has a boules court and a sand volleyball court. So, alongside walks, there are options for enjoying an outdoor activity together.

Practical information about Gulatinget

The millennium site is on road Fv605. According to local information, the express boat pier at Sollibotn is 7 kilometres from the site; check the current timetable when planning your trip. A private boat harbour at Gulatinget can be used by prior arrangement.

The service building has heating and ventilation, as well as four women’s toilets, three men’s toilets, an accessible toilet, a urinal, seven washbasins and two showers. There is a changing table in the accessible toilet; outside, there is a water connection for caravans and motorhomes. As the building’s availability may vary, it is advisable to check before your visit.

Coastal activities at Skjerjehamn and culture in Eivindvik

Blue Garden in Skjerjehamn is an outdoor exhibition about aquaculture. Analogue installations illustrate salmon and trout farming in Norway; the exhibition trail is about 300 metres long. The host team at Skjerjehamn also offers RIB trips in the waters around Gulen. Check whether the activity is available before your trip.

A marked trail on Vestefjellet offers views of the open sea. Its starting point is 900 metres from Skjerjehamn, and the trail climbs to an elevation of 160 metres. This information can help you distinguish the experience from the exhibition or RIB trips; check the trail conditions before your hike. In Eivindvik, there are two stone crosses dating from the early 11th century. A cultural walking trail near the centre offers another way to explore the history of the place.
