Sandane offers both nature experiences and culture: in Trivselsskogen, trails lead from the town to viewpoints, while the Nordfjord Folk Museum offers insights into historic buildings and traditional crafts. The Holvikejekta also tells the story of the region’s boatbuilding tradition. This gives you the opportunity to choose different focuses for your stay – from hiking and museum visits to activities in town.

Trails and views in Trivselsskogen

The Trivselsskogen hiking area is right next to the centre of Sandane. The trails start in town and lead to a viewpoint overlooking Holviksfossen. Utsikten also offers views of Sandane, Sørstranda and the surrounding mountains. If you enjoy combining scenic views with nature on an outing, you’ll find a specific place to start here. At the end of the stairs is a three-part steel section that connects directly to Utsikten.

Trivselsskogen’s Fosseteateret is associated with Holvikfossen. There is a ramp there 80 metres above the waterfall’s drop. The Draumekvila day-trip cabin is also in Trivselsskogen. The footpath there starts at the sign on the E39 and takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes. This approximate walking time can be taken into account when planning an outing, without assuming it is the same as the length of other trails.

Historic buildings and crafts

The Nordfjord Folk Museum in Sandane comprises 44 historic buildings. They were relocated there from various parts of the Nordfjord region. You can explore the open-air museum on your own or as part of a guided tour. During the summer season, from June to August, guided tours of the buildings are offered daily. If you prefer to explore at your own pace, you can do so independently; a guided tour is another option for a visit with explanations.

The museum also offers a nature trail and opportunities to try traditional craft techniques. Alongside the buildings, visitors can therefore explore nature and get hands-on with crafts. This can be a helpful distinction for people travelling together: not everyone has to focus on the same way of exploring the museum.

The Holvikejekta and the boatbuilding tradition

The Holvikejekta in Sandane is the only surviving large open klinker-built cargo boat. Its building houses an exhibition of traditional boats from Nordfjord and an account of the region’s 1,000-year boatbuilding history. This makes the exhibition a distinctive focus alongside the Folk Museum’s historic buildings.

At the Holvikejekta, visitors can use ramps along the walls of the building to view the ship both below and above deck. Those interested in traditional boats can thus explore different areas of the Jekt. For a culture-focused stay, the combination of the ship, the boat exhibition and the region’s boatbuilding history offers a compelling reason to get to know Sandane better.

Activities and music in Sandane

Trivselshagen in Sandane has a swimming facility, climbing options and indoor activities. These add options for exercise and indoor activities to the range of interests catered for. The Sandane Fjordsauna is located at Elvaneset.

Music is also part of the town’s events calendar: Glopperock is considered Norway’s oldest rock festival and began in 1980. The festival takes place annually in Sandane on the second weekend in June. If you plan your trip around this date, you can combine your stay with a festival visit; it takes place at a different time from visits to the museum and hiking area.

When choosing a holiday apartment, you could first consider which side of Sandane you want your stay to focus on: trails and views, historic buildings and crafts, boatbuilding history or a festival weekend.
