Bygstad on the inner Dalsfjord
Accommodation in Bygstad
Bygstad lies on the inner Dalsfjord, amid a landscape of striking natural beauty and high mountains. Storehesten is a distinctive landmark in the area; the landscape bears traces of natural forces and history. Traditions date back to the Viking Age. The setting is also shaped by its inclusion in the Fjordkysten Regional and Geopark: the park is a UNESCO Global Geopark and encompasses dramatic fjords, open coastal landscapes and distinctive mountain formations in western Norway.
Storehesten: Hiking from Bygstad
The well-marked trail leads from Bygstad to the summit of Storehesten. At a normal walking pace, the hike takes about three hours; it is 11 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 780 metres. Storehesten is 1,209 metres high. The walking time, distance and elevation gain give you different reference points for planning. Conditions on the mountain can vary by season, so check them before your hike.
From the top, the view extends to the Åflot Glacier and Jostedalsbreen, the mountains around Bergen and the North Sea. The view makes the summit an impressive destination, while the approximate walking time gives you a practical basis for planning your day. The trail to Storehesten is signposted from Bygstad.
Other natural attractions nearby
For a different mountain perspective, visit the Skaraly day-use cabin, at an elevation of about 700 metres. From there, you can see the Dalsfjord, Storehesten and the Sunnfjord mountains. The car park for the route to the cabin is at Nygjeldshaugane. This means the route to Skaraly is approached differently from the Storehesten hike, which starts in Bygstad.
Osfossen offers a different experience: it is the last waterfall on the Gaula before the river flows into the Dalsfjord. The waterfall is at Osen in Sunnfjord Municipality, by Fylkesvei 57, and is easily accessible. Coming from the south, reach it by turning off the E39 onto Fylkesvei 57; alternatively, you can use Fylkesvei 422. Road and parking conditions may change, so check your route before travelling.
Church and leisure park in Bygstad
Bygstad is home to a wooden long church dating from 1845. Its design and age give the village a distinct cultural and historical character alongside its fjord and mountain scenery. For travellers who want to combine nature and local history in different day plans, it offers a different focus from a summit hike.
Another option for staying active is Bygstad idretts- og fritidspark, completed in 2023. The facility includes a multi-purpose hall with an artificial turf pitch, a three-lane running track, a gymnastics pit, a jumping facility and a bouldering wall. If you plan to use the facilities, check the current rules for public use in advance; these may change.
