Bremanger: Coast, Hiking and History
Accommodation in Bremanger
In the outer part of Bremangerlandet, the landscape is shaped by the open sea, white beaches and steep mountains that descend straight into the sea. Grotlesanden lies at the tip of Grotle on Bremangerlandet and is also the starting point for a hike to Veten. If you are weighing up coastal scenery, mountain trails and historical traces for your trip, Bremanger offers several distinct highlights.
Two distinctive beach landscapes
Grotlesanden has several hundred metres of fine white sand and offers unobstructed views of the open sea. Vetvika has a different character: there, a chalk-white beach and azure sea meet green slopes, sand dunes and sheer black cliffs. The two coastal locations therefore differ clearly in the landscapes described. Grotlesanden combines views of the open sea with the starting point for a hike; Vetvika is a bay with its own distinctive beach and mountain scenery. These features can shape your choice of places to visit, without combining the two locations into a single route.
Hiking destinations with different starting points
The hike to Veten starts at Grotlesanden. Vetehytta, a day-trip cabin overlooking the open sea, stands on Veten. At a moderate pace, the hike to the cabin takes about two hours. If you plan this outing, you have a specific starting point and an approximate hiking time.
You can reach Vetvika from Svarstad on Bremangerlandet via a three-hour mountain hiking trail. The two hikes described therefore have different starting points: Grotlesanden is the starting point for the route up Veten, while Svarstad is the starting point for the route to Vetvika. This lets you decide first which destination best suits your interests when planning your holiday. The stated times refer to each individual hike and should not be combined into a single route duration.
Traces of history in Vetvika and Grotle
Vetvika was completely abandoned in 1951. The ruins of old farms, telephone poles and a protected cemetery with nine graves remain. These traces stand alongside the striking coastal scenery and give the place a historical dimension as well. In Grotle, the historical highlights are elsewhere: the old cemetery of Grotle, Gamle Grotle kyrkjegard, contains medieval graves. The old church of Grotle dates from the 14th century; the cemetery remained in use until 1902. If you are interested in cultural history, you can take these two distinct historical connections into account when choosing places to visit.
Coast, wildlife and activities
The bay of Vetvika often offers good surfing conditions. Guided coastal tours take visitors along the coast, close to nature and wildlife. Fishing trips for the whole family are also offered in the Bremanger(land) area. These experiences add more ways to include the coast and sea in your holiday plans alongside hiking and cultural history. The activities vary in nature: a guided tour along the coast, surfing in the bay or a fishing trip.
Getting there and choosing an area for your holiday
Bremangerlandet is accessible by car on county roads from both Nordfjord and the coast. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Bremanger, you can weigh up your travel arrangements and preferred places to visit together. The hike to Veten starts at Grotlesanden; the mountain hiking trail to Vetvika described here starts in Svarstad. If you are mainly interested in exploring historical traces, you can also include Grotle and Vetvika in your travel plans. This way, your choice of holiday area can reflect the experiences that matter most to you and your family.
