Idse combines a long, partly wooded island landscape with a rich local history. In the northeast, Idse Farm and a naust (boathouse) site are part of the same cultural environment; the island also features distinctive woodland areas, historic homes and archaeological finds. If you are weighing up nature and cultural history for your stay, the island offers concrete points of interest in both areas.

Island and Fjord Setting

Idse is in Strand Municipality in Rogaland, at the mouth of the Høgsfjord and southwest of Jørpeland. The island covers 4.9 square kilometres. North of Idse and Idsal, the Idsefjord stretches as far as Jørpeland. This setting makes Idse an island in a fjord-shaped part of the municipality, rather than an isolated place without a road connection.

The narrow Idsesund strait separates Idse from the 3.1-square-kilometre island of Idsal. County Road 4640 crosses the strait by bridge, connecting the two islands and continuing east to County Road 523 on the mainland. On 6 September, Idse gained a road connection to the rest of the municipality via two bridges: from Kvalvåg to Idsal and from Idsal to Idse. When choosing a holiday apartment, its location on Idse itself or in another place is therefore a useful starting point for comparison.

Woodland Areas and Heights

At 142 metres, Storvarden is the highest point on Idse. On the northern heights, a 332-decare area contains valuable coastal pine forest. Another named woodland site is Litlevare nord: it covers 71.4 decares and is classified as poor boreonemoral rainforest, with nature value grade B. These details represent different aspects of the island’s natural environment—from coastal pine forest to a rainforest site with its own value grade.

If you choose accommodation on Idse, the island’s size is a useful point of reference for getting to know the area: it covers 4.9 square kilometres, and its landscape includes both wooded areas and the northern heights around Storvarden.

Idse Farm and Historic Traces

The Idse cultural environment includes Idse Farm and an associated naust (boathouse) site in the northeast. This site includes the remains of 13 naust bridges, and seven naust are still preserved. The farm has two older homes. One of them was built around 1760 as a central-passage house and used as a tingstue, a local assembly house. The farm setting thus brings together several historical elements: residential buildings, a former meeting place and the preserved naust.

Idse was a noble manor and a local centre of power when the first longhouses were built. Tinghaug is also part of the island’s history: the popular assembly met there for a long time. Those interested in local history can explore several different themes, from the historic farm and earlier assemblies to the structural remains of the naust site.

Archaeological finds include seven flint daggers discovered on Idse in 1922. An iron-smelting pit measuring about 1 metre long and 50 to 60 centimetres deep was also found on the island. These finds add evidence beyond a single building to the history of the farm and assemblies.

Other Interests and Local Character

Kjeksevåg on Idse is listed as a bathing spot and local recreation area. An orienteering map area is also listed for Idse. A small ball games area is listed as a minor outdoor facility at the school. These details offer different points of interest for planning a trip, without implying a shared walking route or a particular order for visiting them.

Agriculture is also part of the local character: potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, blueberries and Christmas trees are grown on Idse. The number of farms has fallen considerably, and only three active dairy farmers remain. These crops and the remaining dairy farms reflect both the diversity of agriculture and the changes in the island’s economy.
