Rennesøy: Hiking Trails, Views and Island History
Accommodation in Rennesøy
Rennesøy is especially varied, with hiking trails and viewpoints: one circular route crosses coastal heathland and plateaus, while other trails offer views across the Ryfylke Basin or lead through gently rolling coastal scenery. The island also bears traces of agriculture, fishing and hydropower. You can shape your stay around nature experiences or discoveries of local history.
Hiking between plateaus, coast and viewpoints
At Helland, a circular hike to the Kitlingen and Varabrekk plateaus starts from the car park. It passes through coastal heathland and descends to Flekkstadmyra; from there, an agricultural track leads back to Helland. The changing landscape of plateau, heath and marshland makes the route easy to follow. If you like to plan your excursions around specific landscape features, this trail description offers several distinct stops.
From a developed car park in Bø, a trail leads to the Nibben and Knott viewpoints. It splits into one route across the plateau and another along the shore. A marked hiking route from Bø to Knott also passes through a cultural landscape along the dry, steep slopes near Niben and Knott. The viewpoints and the described cultural landscape offer different options for planning your day.
A marked, family-friendly circular hike runs across the Reianes peninsula. Parking for Reianes rundt is available at Låder or Nørevågen. The peninsula is low-lying and gently rolling; amphibolite, exposed marble veins and grazing shape the landscape. Sea fishing is possible on its western side. This lets you consider hiking and fishing as different interests for a stay in this coastal area.
There are several viewpoints to choose from, too: Vikafjellet, above Vikevåg, is one of the two most visited viewpoints on Rennesøy. Rennesøyhodnet reaches 234 metres and offers views in every direction across the Ryfylke Basin. Austbøstemmen is a varied hiking area with good views over the hilly plateau and Klosterøya.
Cultural history along the way and in Vikevåg
A cultural trail leads from the cluster of farm buildings by the sea up to Dalestemmen. The water reservoir was built to supply several mills with hydropower. The trail thus connects a cluster of farm buildings with a site whose history tells of the use of hydropower.
Bibmus, a local history museum, is located in Meieriet cultural centre in Vikevåg. The exhibition focuses on building traditions, food and meals, the Eldhus, childhood and growing up, textiles, agriculture and fishing. Its topics range from everyday life and crafts to the region’s main livelihoods. Above Vikevåg, on the road to Østhusvik, is the Bakken museum farm, where the house and barn are under one shared roof.
M/S Hulda is also in Vikevåg. This Swedish fishing boat was built in Väjern, Sweden, in 1908. At Selsneset, visible remains of an impressive burial mound can be seen near the mouth of the Mastrafjord. It may have served as a sea marker. These places add different cultural and historical themes to your hikes, from rural architecture and fishing to a mound that may once have served as a landmark.
Getting there and choosing a focus for your holiday
The E39 European route crosses Rennesøy through the Rennfast road tunnels. To the north, the E39 connects with the Mortavika–Arsvågen ferry service. This information can help you plan your journey. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether hiking, viewpoints or cultural history will be the focus of your trip. The trails and cultural sites mentioned here offer specific destinations, but do not form a single circular route.
For further orientation, you can also explore Rennesøy, Østhusvik, Bru and Mosterøy.
