Ytraland on Karmøy brings together traces of a coastal battery and a historic mining area with adjacent coastal heath. These themes tell different sides of the place’s story: military defence, mines and prospecting sites, and sensitive habitats. If you are looking for a holiday apartment on Karmøy, Ytraland offers a clear thematic focus to help you choose your stay.

Coastal Battery and Tjæremilen

The Ytraland Coastal Battery was part of the HKB 66/977 Vikene battery system. Its main task was to protect access to Vedavågen. Its main armament consisted of four K236(b) guns with a calibre of 7.5 centimetres. These details bring the site’s military function into focus: Ytraland was a gun emplacement within a larger coastal defence system.

Today, only bunkers, concrete gun emplacements and barrack walls remain of the battery. These remains differ considerably from a fully preserved installation: they show individual traces of its structures, while its historical role is mainly understood through its place in the defence system. If you plan to visit individual structures, check their accessibility in advance.

Tjæremilen is also located on Ytraland. An initiative launched in 2021 aimed to produce traditional tar products for the maintenance of stave churches and other medieval wooden buildings. This topic complements the military history with craft traditions and the preservation of historic wooden architecture.

The Historic Mining Area

Ytraland has a historic mining area with 34 recorded mines and prospecting sites. It is about 1.5 kilometres long and extends from Ytraland in the south towards Kvalavåg in the north.

The locations also provide a sense of direction: south of Gåsvatnet, the mining deposits lie east of the road; north of the lake, they lie west of the road. Together with the recorded mines and prospecting sites, this gives a picture of the historic area’s layout. For a stay focused on Ytraland’s history, mining provides a distinct theme alongside the coastal battery.

Coastal Heath and Natural Environment

The coastal heath directly borders the Ytraland industrial area to the north and east. An ecological assessment from 2019 describes large parts of the heath as intact and in good condition. In 2018, the Norwegian Red List of Nature Types classified the adjacent coastal heath as Endangered (EN). It is also a designated nature type of particular conservation concern and is subject to additional protection.

The heath is an important habitat for the eagle owl; however, the actual breeding area lies somewhat farther away. A corridor of lakes and streams also runs through the nearby area between Visnesbukta and Ytraland. Gulls and ducks in particular use it when moving between freshwater and the sea. This context makes clear that the natural environment is not limited to the coastal heath itself, but also includes the waters in the surrounding area. A stay focused on landscape and nature offers different themes from exploring the historic structures.

Ytraland as a Place to Stay

When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to consider what you want to focus on during your stay: the history of the coastal battery, the mining area or the natural features around the coastal heath. To find suitable accommodation, you can first decide whether these themes match your travel plans.

Karmøy in a Broader Context

The wider destination of Karmøy is known for its coastal culture, varied nature and strong industrial heritage. Four museums and a history centre present the region’s history over the past centuries. The Nordvegen History Center presents the history of Norway and the royal seat of Avaldsnes across a period of 3,500 years. This places Ytraland’s military and mining history within Karmøy’s broader cultural and historical context.

Other places on Karmøy also offer their own historical themes: Skudeneshavn Museum Mælandsgården offers insights into the town’s maritime history and everyday life in the past. The Åkrehamn Coastal Museum illustrates Karmøy’s past as an important fishing centre through objects and photographs. These differences may influence your choice of accommodation: the key question is whether you want to focus your stay on Ytraland or also explore other cultural and historical aspects of the destination.
