Hjelmeland: Fjord Landscapes, Hiking and Culture

Hjelmeland offers impressive landscapes and a wide variety of things to discover, from the Jøsenfjord and striking mountain ridges to historic farms and contemporary culture. On Jøsneset, Gunlanuten is the highest point at 829 metres; it lies between the Jøsenfjord, Ombofjord and Erfjord. The hike to Skomakarnibbå takes about five to six hours for the round trip from the car park. The hike to the Ritland Crater starts at the car park in Kleivaland in Vormedalen. Most of the route follows a tractor road through easy terrain with a good surface.

At Trodla-Tysdal, day visitors can walk along the farm grounds into the valley, picnic on the beach or swim in Øvre Tysdalsvatnet. The place is at the innermost end of the lake; there is a sheep farm and a tourism business there. Farms, Architecture and Culture

Vigatunet is an old farm whose history can be traced through written sources back to the 16th century. The farm was acquired as a museum farm in 1970. During the summer opening period, visitors can explore the various buildings, learn more about farming and experience what life on the farm was like.

Hjelmelandsvågen is home to more cultural attractions. The world's largest Jærstol chair is about 4.5 metres tall and stands near the river mouth. Spinneriet, an industrial building dating from 1873, was restored for cultural use. During the summer season, an exhibition is open there, along with a summer café. Årdal Old Church is a wooden Renaissance church; its oldest section dates from 1619. Hjelmelandsvågen also has a walking route through old and new architecture. Skulp-Turen is a walking route featuring various sculptures.
