In Moss, nature experiences meet industrial history: Søndre Jeløy is known for its protected landscape and trails, while Møllebyen tells the story of the city’s industrial past. There are also beaches, routes and key starting points at Mossefossen. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, it may help to first consider whether you’d like to spend your free time mainly outdoors, by the water or exploring history.

Protected landscape and historic trails

The Søndre Jeløy Landscape Protection Area covers about 4.5 km² and was established in 1983. The Kyststien runs through the protected area. On the eastern side of the Mossesundet lie the natural areas of Molbekk, Røysåsen and Kulpe; both the Kyststien and the Pilegrimsleden pass through the area. This gives you several named landscape and route options to consider when planning. One of the best-preserved sections of the historic Fredrikshaldske Kongevei also runs through Mosseskogen.

Water, beaches and routes

Moss has two Blue Flag beaches: Sjøbadet and Tronvikstranda. As the annual certification status may change, check the current status before your trip. Another way to experience the city by the water is the approximately 800-metre river path from Nesparken, along Mossefossen to Verket.

The Vansjøstien starts at Mossefossen and is suitable for hiking and cycling. The 350-kilometre Unionsleden also begins in the heart of Moss, at Konventionsgården and Mossefossen. In the wider Østfold destination, the cycling route from Moss to Karlstad in Sweden follows two alignments through Indre Østfold. Moss railway station is a convenient starting point for the Unionsleden. If you plan to travel by train, check current connections before your trip.

Swimming, paddling, motorboating and fishing are all possible at Vansjø. In Nesparken, near Moss city centre, the closest place to rent canoes or kayaks is at the Moss Kajakklubb clubhouse. Check the rental terms in advance.

Industrial history and historic events

The Moss city and industry museum is located in Møllebyen, next to Mossefossen, in an old mill building. Across two floors, the museum presents Moss’s industrial history through games, competitions and interactive activities. The building’s historic use and the interactive format offer two different ways to engage with the visit.

Another specific connection to history is Konventionsgården: the Convention of Moss was signed there on 14 August 1814. The historic themes of these sites are therefore quite distinct: the museum focuses on industrial history, while Konventionsgården is associated with a particular event.

Finding the right base for your Moss trip

When looking for a holiday apartment in Moss, your travel interests may help guide your choice. If you plan to spend most of your time on trails and enjoying the landscape, Søndre Jeløy, the natural areas on the eastern side of the Mossesundet and the Unionsleden offer specific points of reference. If water activities are your priority, Vansjø and canoe rental in Nesparken are relevant options. For exploring history, Møllebyen, Mossefossen and Konventionsgården offer their own points of interest. This can help you focus your accommodation search on what you’d like to experience in Moss.
