Skiptvet: Glomma Landscapes and Local History
Accommodation in Skiptvet
Skiptvet lies on the western side of the Glomma. River landscapes, agriculture and traces of the timber industry give the area different aspects to discover when planning your trip.
Landscapes, Views and Trails
Most of Skiptvet’s farmland lies on marine, predominantly clay deposits along the Glomma and in the central part of the municipality. In total, 32 percent of the municipality’s area is arable and cultivated land. Agriculture is therefore an essential part of the landscape that characterises the area.
The Furukollen observation tower stands 12 metres above the ground and offers expansive views. The Kulturminnestien trail offers a different experience: it leads to the old farm Steinhytta, where visitors can take their first rest. The view from the tower and a stop at the old farm offer two different ways to appreciate the area.
Farm History and Timber Processing
In the centre of Skiptvet, at the Bygdetun, is the Skiptvet Bygdemuseum. It includes buildings and objects from various farms in Skiptvet. The collection gives farm history a tangible connection to buildings and objects from the area.
Another historical trace is Nes Lense, a timber sorting boom several kilometres long. It included numerous sorting bays and several log-driving machines. The Nes Lensemuseum complex also includes a mess hut, a sawmill, a power station, a workshop and a forge. Together, these components show the variety of facilities associated with timber sorting.
Skiptvet Church adds medieval architecture to these themes. The stone church was built between 1150 and 1200. A medieval wheel cross is set into the wall above the chancel portal. It bears an inscription from the 18th century and was a grave cross. Its construction date, inscription and former function make the cross a distinctive detail of the church.
Walks and Trip Planning
Jonsrud Alpakka offers nature walks in the area around the farm. Each visitor is accompanied by their own alpaca. Booking and activity details may change; check with the provider before your visit.
If you are looking for a holiday rental, it helps to choose the focus of your trip in advance: would you like it to centre more on farm and industrial history, the medieval church, or nature walks and views? Skiptvet offers different points of interest for these themes, so you can plan your holiday around the one that appeals to you most.
Skiptvet in the Wider Østfold Travel Region
Østfold stretches along the eastern side of the Oslofjord from Moss to the Swedish border. Ytre Hvaler National Park offers a different landscape, with 354 km² of coastline and archipelago. It is Norway’s first marine national park; 96 percent of its area lies underwater. A network of trails is suitable for hiking and includes the Kyststien coastal path. For regional holiday planning, this creates a striking contrast between Skiptvet’s location by the Glomma and the coastal and archipelago focus of the national park.
