Fjelberg – Church, Vicarage and Trails on Fjelbergøya
Accommodation in Fjelberg
Fjelberg brings together coastal scenery, geological diversity and a distinctive historic ensemble. A sheltered strait lies between Fjelbergøya and Borgundøya. Rocks from the Precambrian, Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras occur on Fjelbergøya. A walk around the island, considered in connection with the geological history of its rocks and soils, can offer an interesting geological experience. The landscape can thus be viewed both through its coastal geography and through the vast timescales represented by its rocks.
The church and vicarage as a historic ensemble
Fjelberg Church is a wooden church built in 1722. Together with the old vicarage, it forms a historic ensemble on Fjelbergøya. Fjelberg Prestegard is a protected historic vicarage estate. The church and vicarage therefore belong to a shared cultural-historical context.
The main building at Fjelberg Prestegard contains three historic rooms dedicated to three vicars who lived there for many years. This also draws attention to the people associated with the vicarage. Fjelberg Church also contains a painted depiction of the Last Supper. It is a copy after the Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) and his “Last Supper,” now in the Pinacoteca di Brera museum in Milan, Italy. The painting brings a specific connection to Flemish Baroque art into the church’s history.
Fjelberg was once probably home to a stave church built in the 13th century. Another recurring tradition is associated with the vicarage: since 1958, Norsk Misjonsallianse has held its national festival there every second day of Pentecost. The historical connections thus extend from a possible medieval church to this tradition.
Trails and views on Fjelbergøya
Two trails on Fjelbergøya, described in different ways, lead to their own destinations. A marked trail leads to Påskeåsen. A forest trail runs east via the Jespersen farm to viewpoints overlooking Ølen and Sydnes. You can choose a route based on two interests: the destination Påskeåsen or the viewpoints overlooking Ølen and Sydnes. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Fjelberg, you can consider whether the history of the church and vicarage, time on the trails, or both will shape your stay. This gives your trip planning a clear thematic focus and links your choice of holiday destination to the activities that interest you.
