Uskedalen reveals different sides of a Norwegian village: the Uskedalselva alternates between rapids and gently flowing stretches, while historic buildings and memorial sites offer insights into the area's history. There are also mountain trails and a climbing area with a wide range of routes. When searching for a holiday rental, you can consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on the landscape and activities or on cultural discoveries.

River, Valley and Mountains

The Børsdalen trail follows the Børsdalselva through a valley flanked by Englafjell and Ulvanåso. Together, the river and mountains shape the character of this route. Fagerdalsvatnet lake lies in Fagerdalen, where you can also find the remains of stone walls from old mountain farms, or summer farms. Those interested in landscapes and traces of the past will encounter two distinct aspects of the valley here, without needing to combine them into a single excursion.

The Uskedalselva offers changing impressions along the river, with its rapids and calmer stretches. A road runs alongside its entire length, making it easier to access fishing and outdoor recreation. For the Englafjell route, a large car park is available at Gamleskulen in the village centre; an information board provides details about Uskedalen. These are useful landmarks for finding your way when planning your days outdoors.

Activities with Different Focuses

The Uskedalen–Ulvanåso climbing area has around 60 naturally protected routes. They range from 1 to 18 pitches in length, with grades from 4− to 7+. These details give climbers clear points of reference for comparing routes by length and difficulty. The area adds a well-defined climbing option to the activities available around the river and mountain trails.

The landscape can also be explored through its waterways and valleys: the Børsdalen trail follows the river, while Fagerdalsvatnet in Fagerdalen offers a lake as a distinct landmark. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Uskedalen, thinking about the focus you want for your trip can be a good place to start: will it be mainly about climbing, trails through the valley, fishing or the history of the village?

Buildings and Memorial Sites

Bygdetunet Rød comprises a farmhouse, a storehouse, a smithy and a mill dating from the 18th century. The site illustrates farm life in Kvinnherad in the previous century. Together with the Dønhaugsamlinga, the collection comprises more than 450 objects. Bygdetunet also includes a cooper's workshop by the sea. These different features make rural life and traditional crafts a distinct theme to explore in Uskedalen.

The old Haugland School also tells the story of the area: it is a school museum for Kvinnherad, built in 1893 and used as a school for the Haugland and Musland school districts until 1966. Another historic building is Kapteinsgården, a protected officers' residence from the 18th century in the mountain Empire style. Uskedalen Church was built in 1914 to plans by cathedral architect Olaf Nordhagen. It is listed as a cultural heritage site by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage, Riksantikvaren, but is not protected.

A revolver cannon at Myklebust quay commemorates the events of the war in 1940, in which it was used. A standing stone beside Uskedalen's permanent Christmas tree commemorates those called up during the war of 1807 to 1814. It was erected in 1914 and is considered one of the largest of its kind in Norway. Together with the school, church and farmstead, these places offer different historical perspectives, from everyday life in earlier times to memories of wartime.
