Krøderen: Railway Heritage and Kryllingparken
Accommodation in Krøderen
Krøderen offers two very different themes right in town: the historic Krøderbanen railway at the station and the activity-focused Kryllingparken. You can therefore consider cultural history and active pursuits as separate focal points when planning your trip.
Railway heritage at Krøderen Station
Krøderen Station is protected as a technical cultural heritage site. The Krøderbanen opened in 1872 as a narrow-gauge railway and is operated as a heritage railway by Norsk Jernbaneklubb and Stiftelsen Krøderbanen. All the old facilities from the steam locomotive era are located at the station. This makes both the railway’s history and its technical heritage central here.
The station park has an outdoor café and a separate toilet building, which was newly built in 2023. The availability of the toilet building may vary outside operating hours.
Get active at Kryllingparken
Kryllingparken is located above Coop and Krøderen School, next to Krødsheradhallen. The park is for skating, cycling, scootering, playing and training; it is also Norway’s largest pump track facility. This makes it a different focal point from the station: here, the emphasis is on activity and different uses in one place, while the station focuses on railway history and historic facilities. If you want to include different interests in your trip planning, you can consider both as separate excursion destinations.
Water and getting your bearings in town
There is a boat ramp in the centre of Krøderen. There are two public toilets at the Kørpen pumping station, open during the summer season from May to September. Krøderen camping is designated as a bathing area. This information provides an overview of different water-related topics and seasonal facilities in town.
Krødsherad: Fjord, mountains and culture
In the wider destination of Krødsherad, the municipality surrounds the southern part of Lake Krøderen and has a shoreline along the lake. Krøderfjorden is 41 km long. There are opportunities for fishing, swimming and boating there; Krødsherad also has several designated bathing areas. The MS Kryllingen II offers seasonal trips on Krøderfjorden. Its schedule may change, so it is worth checking the dates before planning a trip.
The wider Krødsherad area also offers mountain and hiking experiences: Høgevarde is located on Norefjell at 1,459 m and is one of the popular hiking destinations. On clear days, the view extends to Jotunheimen, Hardangerjøkulen and Gaustatoppen. The local hiking programme includes 22 hiking destinations with trail register boxes. The trails are marked in blue; many are also marked with GPS coordinates and listed on UT.no.
Villa Fridheim offers another cultural perspective in the wider Krødsherad area. This well-preserved Swiss chalet-style house is a fairy-tale museum focusing on fairy tales, storytelling and intangible cultural heritage. The focus is on the life’s work of Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe. The programme also includes exhibitions, concerts and events, and may change.
Choose the right location
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to distinguish between the different themes: if you prioritise railway heritage and Kryllingparken, focus on Krøderen. If you also want to include the fjord, hiking destinations and Villa Fridheim, plan on the scale of the wider destination of Krødsherad. Choose your accommodation location based on which of these experiences will actually shape your trip.
