Birkenes: Discover lakes, trails and culture

Ogge, the Tovdalselva and historic sites give Birkenes a varied character: waterscapes, outdoor activities and cultural history sit side by side. When planning your trip, it’s worth first considering which of these aspects you’d like to explore more closely.

Waterscapes and the nature school

The Ogge lake district in Birkenes has 70 kilometres of shoreline and more than 300 islands and islets to explore by canoe or kayak. The Tovdalselva is also part of the landscape: it flows through Birkenes municipality, is home to salmon, and runs freely in Birkenes from the mountains to the fjord. A far-reaching lake landscape and a river course thus offer two distinct natural features.

At the municipal level, the nature school camp on Digesholman in Ogge is open to everyone. On Digesholmene in the southwestern part of the lake, Midt-Agder Friluftsråd has established a nature school. Canoes can be rented there, and overnight stays in a shelter are also available. Holmgang on Digesholmane consists of activity stations and is aimed particularly at lower secondary school pupils. The activities can be enjoyed individually, but are preferably done in groups. Hiking trails, views and seasons

Maps and descriptions of hikes through the municipality of Birkenes are available to download. A section of the Barnevandrerstien runs from Varpelia via Grasham and the Birkenes Bygdemuseum to Birkeland primary school. The route follows the former Lillesand-Flaksvandsbanen railway line. Check trail markings and local access points before setting out.

Kolåsbu, the day-use cabin in Herefoss below Kolåsen, offers views of the Herefossfjord and the surrounding village. A path of about 0.7 kilometres leads to the cabin from Hanefossbrua or the Hanefoss dam. A circular hike via Kolåsbu and Kolåsen back to the starting point is about 2.2 kilometres long. These two distances help distinguish the short path to the cabin from the longer loop; check trail conditions and access points locally. Vrangefoss bru crosses the river at a waterfall section on the trail network around Holmslia and Flakkeheia.

Seasonal activities also vary: in winter, Toplandsheia has groomed ski trails and opportunities for sledding. Snow, grooming and availability may vary. The Topptur offering in Birkenes includes 25 peaks and viewpoints with specially installed Topptur postboxes; the number may change in future editions. Cultural history and events

The Mollestadeika is estimated to be 1,000 years old and has a circumference of 10.5 metres. It lies about three kilometres south of central Birkeland and is well signposted from Route 41. Birkeland is on this national highway, which is also called Telemarksveien. Check the signs and road conditions locally.

The Birkenes Bygdemuseum shows how transport and industry have shaped the municipality. Its collection also includes materials on the Lillesand-Flaksvandsbanen and timber rafting; individual exhibitions may change. The Iveland og Vegusdal bygdemuseum, also known as Fjermedalsmuseet, is in the western part of Birkenes. In Herefoss, Skrivargarden Nes was formerly the official residence of the Råbyggelag district judge. Myhre Torvstrøfabrikk is Norway’s only peat museum, but is currently closed for necessary restoration work. Check its current status before travelling.

Birkelandsdagene takes place every year on the third weekend in August, with a programme running from Friday to Sunday. Dates and events may vary from year to year. For a stay by the water, Kirkekilen is near Herefoss’s old village centre: it has a beach, a sand volleyball court, a bathing jetty and a diving tower. Facilities may vary seasonally.
