Birkeland can be explored in many ways: hiking trails lead in several directions, Birkenesparken brings together winter and fitness activities, and trails along the Tovdalselva tell the story of the area's cultural heritage. You can plan a varied holiday with longer hikes, short riverside walks and visits to cultural sites.

Hiking Trails and Active Days

Municipal maps and descriptions are available for hikes in southern Birkeland. These include Røllend, Tveide rundt, Bersestien and Skogstien. The names offer a specific selection to help you plan; check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.

East of Birkeland, the trail network leads to Haugevann rundt, Årdalsåsen, Espe rundt, Rundetjønn and Dyblemyrheia. One of the listed eastern routes is still under development. To the north and west of the village, the listed routes include Slågedalsbrua, Birkenesparken, Rundt Flakk, Homslia rundt, Eikehola rundt and Elvestien fra Teinefossen. Choosing a direction helps you select an area for a hiking day, rather than treating all the trails as one single loop.

Several hiking trails start at Birkenesparken, which also connects to the trail network west, north and east of Birkeland. The park also has a floodlit cross-country ski trail, a biathlon facility with 21 targets, a ski café and paved roller-ski tracks. Cyclists and wheelchair users can also use these tracks. The training park adds twelve strength and balance training stations and is open to everyone around the clock. This means there are different ways to stay active here, without requiring the same equipment or type of activity.

Along the Tovdalselva, the River Trail and Riverside Area offer a short one-kilometre route and a longer 4.9-kilometre route. The Riverside Area has two sand volleyball courts, toilets and an open shelter. Information boards along the River Trail describe the cultural heritage associated with the river, including stone walls and bridges dating from the era of timber rafting. The riverside route thus combines a walk with insights into the area's former uses.

A longer option is the main route of the Svalandsgubben Skauløp, known as “Gubben”: the 27-kilometre circular route starts and ends at Birkenesparken. The marked route can be used as a hiking trail year-round and at your own pace. The short routes at the Riverside Area and this loop differ considerably in length; if you plan to take part in the event, check the dates and arrangements for your year of travel.

Culture, Water and Local Insights

The marked section of the Barnevandrerstien through Birkenes runs from Varpelia via Grasham and the Birkenes bygdemuseum to Birkeland Primary School. The route follows the former Lillesand-Flaksvandsbanen railway line. Here, the hiking trail meets railway history: its course shows how today's route follows a former railway line.

Birkenes bygdemuseum is located a few kilometres south of Birkeland centre. Exhibits include authentic workshop and farm settings, veteran vehicles and permanent exhibitions on the municipality's history. Visiting arrangements vary by season. The nearby museum café serves food with an emphasis on locally produced ingredients and tradition, including homemade pastries and rømmegrøt; café opening may also vary by season. Check seasonal visiting arrangements before your visit.

Birkenes folkebibliotek is centrally located in Birkeland, in Strøget. Events throughout the year include concerts, book presentations, Christmas workshops and puppet theatre; the specific programme varies. South of the centre, the Berse bathing and recreation area is nearby, with a beach, bathing jetty, green space and toilets. The library and Berse offer two different ways to take a break in your day: culture in the town centre or time by the water.

The nearby Flakkeheia outdoor area has an extensive network of marked hiking trails and several open shelters for public use. There are also climbing routes, a via ferrata and a zipline; these activities are managed by the Birkenes Climbing Club. Trail and shelter conditions may change, so check local conditions before heading out.

The Right Base for Your Stay

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Birkeland, you can start by choosing the focus you want: trails starting at Birkenesparken, riverside walks and cultural heritage along the Tovdalselva, or a visit to the museum south of the centre all lead to different day plans. This way, you can choose your base to suit your holiday plans rather than relying on a general idea of what accommodation should offer.
