Podgorica’s Old Town was the heart of the city during the Ottoman period from 1474 to 1879.

Culture and History

Podgorica’s Clock Tower was built in the 18th century by Hadži Mehmed-paša Osmanagić. The city is home to several museums and galleries, including the Modern Gallery, the Rista Stijović Gallery in the Old Town, and the permanent exhibition “When Nature Speaks” at the Natural History Museum of Montenegro. The Center for Contemporary Art of Montenegro houses a collection of more than 1,000 exhibits from 60 countries.

The Petrović Palace has the status of a cultural monument, was a former residence of the Petrović dynasty, and was built in 1891. Kuslev’s House is one of the few surviving examples of authentic Balkan architecture from the early 20th century and houses the exhibition “Kuslev’s House – a Journey Through Time”.

Podgorica’s old hammam was built in the Oriental style during the Ottoman period. At the former hammam site, the Karver bookshop organizes literary events.

At the foot of Gorica Hill stands the Church of St. George, which was built between the 9th and 11th centuries. Čubranović House is legally protected as a significant cultural and historical site. Sastavci Stone Bridge is the oldest bridge in Podgorica; at the same time, it is believed to date back to Roman times.

Activities

Gorica Hill has trails for walking, cycling, and triathlon. There is also a Mediterranean garden with endemic species. The Circuit around Korita begins in Podgorica and is 65 kilometres long.

Near Podgorica, a four-kilometre route along the Zeta can be followed by kayak, taking approximately two hours. At Dajbabe Monastery near Podgorica, a natural cave serves as a place of worship.

Food and Drink

Podgorica’s Old Town offers traditional specialities in authentic restaurants or cafés. Keković Winery preserves a family tradition of wine production spanning three generations.
