Sušćepan: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Church of Saint Stephen in Sušćepan has two griffins embedded in its side walls.

Culture

Montenegro recognizes the Church of Saint Stephen in Sušćepan as a cultural asset of national importance. Its balustrade slabs bearing griffins are pre-Romanesque Byzantine works from the 9th century. The church was built during the time of Tvrtko or Herceg Stjepan.

A commemorative plaque on Jovo Grbić’s house recalls the meeting place of illegal fighters as well as NOR fighters Nedeljko and Petar Grbić.

Hiking

The Tatar bašta–Sušćepan–Ratiševina–Mokrine trail is suitable for walking and hiking and is described as a route near the city. Sušćepan is part of a destination area for active tourism that includes the hinterland of Sušćepan, Ratiševina and Mokrine. The trail connects hinterland villages with churches and other sights.

The Tatar Bašta (old bridge)–Sušćepan (Bostanj spring) section was marked as a mountain route by the “Subra” mountaineering club. Stonework was repaired, vegetation was cleared and signposts pointing towards Sušćepan were installed. The route reaches Bostanj spring after approximately 20 minutes of easy walking.

From Bostanj spring, a path leads to the Church of St. Cosmas and Damian and to a viewpoint; both are a little more than 20 minutes away on foot. The springs of Sušćepan have been described as well-maintained and paved places where the villagers gathered.
