Monasteries and religious history
Ostrog Monastery was founded by Metropolitan Vasilije Jovanović at the beginning of the second half of the 17th century. It consists of two cave churches: the Lower Church and the Upper Church. This distinctive layout and the monastery’s history make Ostrog a prominent destination for anyone interested in the religious history of architecture and culture. Ostrog is considered one of the most visited monasteries in the Balkans.
Ostrog Monastery also houses the relics of Saint Vasilije of Ostrog. Orthodox Christians, Muslims and Catholics consider them miraculous. Early medieval traces and urban history
The Gradina of Martinići was built in the final decades of the 8th century and the first decades of the 9th century as an early medieval fortified town. It is identified with Porphyrogenitus’s Lontodokla, a centre of early medieval Zeta. The Gradina is listed as protected cultural heritage. Spuž Fortress and its fortification walls are also part of the protected cultural heritage. Both sites invite visitors to explore fortified structures, although their respective historical classifications differ.
Danilovgrad itself has retained the layout of its old town and the character of the period in which it was founded; this is considered a special cultural value. A specific example of its urban planning is the town plan completed in 1869. It established the regulation of the Zeta riverbed and the routes of the main roads. The area’s history thus ranges from the early medieval fortified town at Martinići to the planning of the town in the 19th century.
