Vrela is first mentioned in a document by Ivan Crnojević from 1485. Historical accounts also place the settlement along the medieval route Kotor–Podgorica–Plav–Peć, which served as a caravan route for watering and resting and probably also offered overnight accommodation.
Historical traditions also connect Vrela with the use of watermills: four mills once operated along its stream. These included two brotherhood mills founded by Bishop Petar I in 1786, which had previously belonged to Cetinje Monastery.

Kosmač, Lašorska Pećina, Mali Siljevik and Batrićeva Glavica are located near Vrela. The surrounding area is home to Manastir Duljevo, Lipska Pećina, Praskvica and Praskoica.
Geographical Location
Vrela is described as being located on the road from Cetinje towards Budva, approximately 9 kilometres from Cetinje. A 1.8-kilometre branch road connects the settlement with the main road. Local reports also mention bus connections with Cetinje.
